Ed Sheeran talks ipswich on 17:33 - May 31 by dickie | Off the top of my head I would probably offer up Bjork, Macca, Beck, Thom Yorke, Damon Albarn, Amy Winehouse, Bowie, Lana Del Rey, Lorde, Father John Misty, St Vincent... all of which I'd argue have written and performed much more interesting music in the last 10 - 20 years or so in my humble opinion. I actually rate Ed Sheeran, he's brilliant at what he does but I just think there are many others who I find more inspirational and interesting (hence me suggesting his songwriting brilliance is somewhat hyperbolic). It is all very subjective though! |
Thanks for your response - there are several on your list I really rate too! My point was, it's easy for us older chaps to sneer and dismiss music from the younger generations, just as younger generations can easily dismiss ours. They'd be well within their rights to point out that McCartney hasn't written a great song since before the Walkman was created... and maybe they'd be right! In my experience it's the young 'uns who tend to be more open to the merits of older music though, and what seems great now wasn't always thought of as being great at the time it was made.

I'd agree re. McCartney up to the new one - surprisingly impressive! With regards to the younguns you're definitely right, however our Ed hasn't been that cool with the kids for a few years - more cool with their parents! I teach guitar to about 70 kids a week and Mr Sheeran by and large is their folks' music (as depressing as that is to my 37 year old self!)

That's probably true. Missus is an elementary school teacher... No interest among her kids in poor Ed at all. Still, luckily for us, if his fan base tends to be older, the adult shirts cost more than the kids ones!

He was an underground indie kid, and people did think he was amazing, and then more people heard about him, and they thought he was amazing, and then he was the biggest current guitar-based singer-songwriter in the country. So some people started to hate him. I saw him at a Festival when he was only about 15. He was a brilliant performer. We rushed out of the tent after the gig to try and talk to him to book him for our venue, but he had already gone to his Dad's car to be driven onto his next gig of the day. So we missed out. He worked incredibly hard to get where he is. He gigged relentlessly. I don't begrudge him any of his fame or money.
