Ed Sheeran talks ipswich on 18:26 - May 29 by dickie | He really wasn't, I gigged with him a few times back in the day and remember remarking that I didn't know what all the fuss was about, if I recall I said "he's a young, ginger Craig David". "You Need Me.." was as edgy as it got (great tune though!) All subjective I know, and he definitely has a talent for writing a catchy hit plus is a really lovely chap but it's still generic pop. Mccartney III is way more interesting as an example of what a singer songwriter can do and he's nearly 80! |
That fact that you gigged with him (I'm presuming on the pub circuit) suggests he WAS an indie kid. I guess it depends how literal you're going with the term "indie".

Yes you're right, all those early releases were self released or on small independents. I guess all I'm saying is I do think he's great, I just think it's hyperbole to label him a songwriting genius. But again, that's all subjective

For me, it’s terrible formulaic pop music for 15 - 25 year olds who have never really found what music they actually do like.

Ed Sheeran talks ipswich on 23:27 - May 29 with 2371 views | King_ding_a_lin_g | I saw Ed play on a tiny stage at Manchester SU in 2011 (same night I met my Mrs) and wasn't convinced at all... since then I've grown to appreciate him massively and he's developed into a fantastic artist. We saw him headline Glastonbury a few years ago which was epic. Doing that stage justice as a solo artist is no mean feat, and he smashed it. Respect. The only criticism I can level Ed's way is that I think he has produced music which he believes the people would lap up, and they have... in their tens of millions. As opposed to having his own style and just producing music based on that style, whether people like it or not. He's a tremedously clever man and I love him.

You've introduced the hammer to the nail. People sneer at Ed and then parrot some great but unknown artist, you listen politely and then wonder how they've managed to record tinnitus and release it as "music". Seriously, just enjoy what you enjoy and let others do similar. As long as you don't try to share it with me at 2AM booming from your 15 year old Corsa worth less than the bass box you thought necessary.... | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Ed Sheeran talks ipswich on 07:51 - May 29 by Churchman | Surely it’s all about opinion. People always drop to their knees when Bob Dylan is mentioned, but I always found his stuff awful. I saw Sheeran saw play without knowing who he was in 2012 and while that genre of music isn’t really for me, it was clear he was very good. Sheeran deserves all the plaudits he gets. I actually don’t think he creates music for the masses. I just think he creates music and the masses like it. There is a difference. Personally, I much prefer him as a shirt sponsor than a seedy betting company. It’s about time betting companies were banned from advertising anyway. |
“Bob Dylan’s stuff is awful” What, the most influential songwriter of the past 60 odd years? That Bob Dylan?

Not sure it was the songwriter part of singer/songwriter that Dylan struggled with.

It's all personal taste isn't it? So whoever he says you'll be able to dismiss. I don't know enough of Ed's stuff, but in terms of great songwriters of the modern era I'd have Noel Gallagher up there. Plus Jack White. Adele and Lady Gaga should probably feature highly. Bjork? Thom Yorke? Dolly Parton? Beck?

In that case, Prince. I do think there's probably a few artists mentioned who rely on songwriters aren't there? I won't pretend to know what percentage belong to whom but often it seems a song's source comes from some unexpected places.

Off the top of my head I would probably offer up Bjork, Macca, Beck, Thom Yorke, Damon Albarn, Amy Winehouse, Bowie, Lana Del Rey, Lorde, Father John Misty, St Vincent... all of which I'd argue have written and performed much more interesting music in the last 10 - 20 years or so in my humble opinion. I actually rate Ed Sheeran, he's brilliant at what he does but I just think there are many others who I find more inspirational and interesting (hence me suggesting his songwriting brilliance is somewhat hyperbolic). It is all very subjective though!
