Gareth Southgate on 09:51 - Jun 21 by Simonds92 | In his 1 tournament so far he's reached the semi final. Also got us to the final of that Euro league thing. He's drawn one game and suddenly he's not good enough! (France drew with Hungary the other day, where was the outcry then?!). Head and shoulders above anyone we've had in 20 odd years and crucial to the culture he has created within the current group. The fact that players all get on, can speak to the media so well and dont feel the weight of the shirt is a really underestimated improvement he established, we cannot be successful without that. Gareth Hale could have led England to the semi-finals of the last World Cup. England beat Tunisia by the skin of their teeth, the might of Panama and bang average Sweden. Colombia without their star player James on pens. Outclasedd twice by Belgium, albeit both were dead rubbers. In the one game which really mattered England deservedly lost to a good but far from outstanding Croatia team. Remember Croatia reached the last four after beating both Denmark and Russia on pens. Hardly Brazil 1982 quality.

Gareth Southgate on 10:59 - Jun 21 with 609 views | MerseyBlue | I think he plays it far too safe. We have a good crop of exciting attacking players but he puts them on too tight a leash. The 'double pivot' is too negative for me. I can accept being more pragmatic against top sides like France or Italy, but you have to go and sieze the game against the likes of Scotland, Austria and Romania. I wasn't one of those saying we'd roll the jocks over 4-0, but I did expect us to play with more attacking intent, which should have been enough for us to beat a lesser side regardless of circumstance.

You can only beat what's in front of you though. I doubt anyone in Wales is complaining that they've only beaten the worst performing team at the tournament so far. England are the only nation on the planet who's fans would complain about getting to a World Cup semi-final. Heck if England somehow won the Euros this year I'm sure people would still complain about the Scotland game.

England won't be winning anything under Southgate. It makes reaching the semi-finals of a tournament lot easier if you face nobody good en route. Even Wales can claim a top scalp by beating Belgium although had Northern Ireland possessed a striker of talent they'd have been out in the last 16.

I think there are things fans could criticise him for though. I do think he plays it overly safe sometimes. I don't think he knows what his best starting XI or formation is, which is a worry considering we're well into a tournament now. But overall he's done an ok job and we have a sense of optimism that began in Russia 2018 I haven't known for many a year. But accusing him of only picking players from big clubs is nonsensical.

I don't think we'd be winning under anyone, our defence and midfield doesn't compare to most of the top teams. And even then every "big" team bar Italy has had similar stumbles this tournament. That's just the reality of international football. The last team to dominate on their way to winning a tournament was probably Spain.

Gareth Southgate on 10:46 - Jun 21 by noggin | One lacklustre game against a Scotland team that played very well on the day, and fans are calling for the manager's head. And we wonder why England never succeed at these tournaments. FFS. |
....in 2 games. I doubt any team has a worse stat than that. Even Scotland have managed 6 and Turkey managed 12 in their 3 games. I don't think that fans expressing concern at our manager is the reason we don't succeed.

Gareth Southgate on 11:43 - Jun 21 with 464 views | Timefliesbyintheblue | Football folk tend to be fickle - How many wrote Germany off after their first game. They have gone from 'useless' to one of the favourites. In England we seem at times to revel in failure; perhaps it is because we are used to it and therefore expect it! For myself I always believe Ipswich/England are going to win everything - until results prove me wrong! In Southgate I trust....

What players from "lesser" clubs would you start and what unfashionable formation would you choose?

Gareth Southgate on 11:56 - Jun 21 with 430 views | Skip_Intro | Has Southgate done a 'great' job? Probably not, however he got us to our first Semi in years. Yes you can argue that we had an easy path but we got knocked out by Iceland under his predecessor (not counting Sam obviously...) Shouldn't that have been an 'easy' game? He's bringing through a lot of young talent and giving them an opportunity - most of the team are making their debuts at a major tournament and will be learning every game. Maybe Southgate isn't the best manager in the world but his record to date is pretty good at the one major tournament he has had so far. Maybe, just maybe, we should give him the benefit of the doubt and accept that our team isn't really on a par with the tournament favourites and just enjoy the ride however long it lasts...

There is a difference between not being happy and hyperbole. Sadly you've fallen into the latter. And this is after a rather drab 0-0 against a well-drilled Scotland who got their tactics absolutely spot on on the night. Whilst ignoring the good performance about Croatia. That, added to the assertion we need a win against the Czech's when we don't just makes you come across as a bit of a weapon who can't count, old boy. Which I'm sure you're not. But the reaction is way OTT.

....all the OP said was that Southgate isn't our biggest asset. I'd say that was a totally factual statement, definitely not "OTT" nor "Hyperbole". Too many people have, as usual, got swept up on a wave of "it's coming home" and cheap lager......that's where the hyperbole is.

I personally think that Southgate has been a great asset for England, based on where we were, to where we are now. The days of Sven, Capello, McClaren, Hodgson and Allardyce (thankfully only one game) were far more bleak than the time we’ve had with Southgate. I’d argue that Southgate is the first manager since SBR, that really has vested, personal interest and love for the England team. He handles the media extremely well - half the role of an England manager. He’s developed a squad of likeable players who seem to care and want to win - this could be questioned under previous managers. I think the better performances will come, but for now it’s about getting a job done.
