Ok… I haven’t even heard it today… on 12:58 - Jul 7 by GeoffSentence
I always thought that the 'it's coming home' reference was about the tournament coming to England. Maybe I'm wrong, everyone else seems to think it means 'we are going to win it'.
I don't think the rest of the world understands the self-deprecation of the song. From what I've heard Baddiel and Skinner say about it, it's very much supposed to be about the pain of disappointment after disappointment, not being confident of a win, not being confident of a loss, but just believing that one day, it might just happen. Alas, when the rest of the world hear us chanting it they just think we are arrogant. C'est la vie.
"Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience."

No... it's definitely the latter...
Everyone seems to know the score They've seen it all before They just know They're so sure That England's gonna throw it away - this wouldn't be about just hosting the tournament would it?
But all those oh-so-nears Wear you down Through the years - such as losing penalty shoot-outs in semi finals (or other disappointments)
Jules Rimet still gleaming Thirty years of hurt Never stopped me dreaming - those dreams of winning the thing, following the reference of the trophy we won.

Three Lions Frank Skinner, David Baddiel, ... It's coming home It's coming home It's coming Football's coming home (we'll go getting bad results) It's coming home It's coming home It's coming Football's coming home It's coming home It's coming home It's coming Football's coming home It's coming home It's coming home It's coming Football's coming home Everyone seems to know the score They've seen it all before They just know They're so sure That England's gonna throw it away Gonna blow it away But I know they can play 'Cause I remember Three Lions on a shirt Jules Rimet still gleaming Thirty years of hurt Never stopped me dreaming So many jokes, so many sneers But all those oh-so-nears Wear you down Through the years But I still see that tackle by Moore And when Linekar scored Bobby belting the ball And Nobby Dancing Three Lions on a shirt Jules Rimet still gleaming Thirty years of hurt Never stopped me dreaming (What a save, Gordon Banks! (Good old England, England that couldn't play football) (England have got it in the bag) I know that was then but it could be again It's coming home It's coming Football's coming home It's coming home It's coming home It's coming Football's coming home (England has done it) It's coming home It's coming home It's coming Football's coming home It's coming home It's coming home It's coming Football's coming home Three Lions on a shirt (it's coming home, it's coming) Jules Rimet still gleaming (football's coming home, it's coming home) Thirty years of hurt (it's coming home, it's coming) Never stopped me dreaming (football's coming home) Three Lions on a shirt (it's coming home, it's coming) Jules Rimet still gleaming (football's coming home, it's coming home) Thirty years of hurt (it's coming home, it's coming) Never stopped me dreaming (football's coming home) Three Lions on a shirt (it's coming home, it's coming) Jules Rimet still gleaming (football's coming home, it's coming home) Thirty years of hurt (it's coming home, it's coming) Never stopped me dreaming (football's coming home) Three Lions on a shirt

Most of the lyrics are about England blowing it as usual, but just the 'its coming home' bit I was positive was simply because the tournament was held in England.

The wiki entry for it suggests I was right. Also some interesting alternative lyrics referencing Butcher in there.

I think the Three Lions '98 version clears things up with 'we still believe' at the start.

And the slightly less charismatic but equally emotion evoking:
"Nah nah nah Nah nah nah nah nah Nah nah nah Nah nah nah Nah nah nah Nah nah nah Nah...
Me and me Mum and me Dad and me Gran We're off to Waterloo Me and me Mum and me Dad and me Gran And a bucket of Vindaloo

inews has it that it means both
"There’s a double meaning at play in the phrase “football’s coming home”. Firstly, it’s a reference to Euro ’96 being held in England — a return of a major competition to the country that invented the game and gave it to the world. Matches were held in Wembley, Old Trafford, Anfield, Villa Park, Elland Road, Hillsborough, City Ground and St James’ Park.
The other meaning is even more metaphorical: a victory in the competition would bring the trophy and the glory back to England — giving a sense of mastery and ownership over the beautiful game that was lost the first time a team outside the Home Nations started to excel. This meaning is less obvious in the 1996 original — but it’s important to the 1998 version, which is about a competition that wasn’t held in England."

Fabulous song, now trying to work out the metaphsical hidden meanings in the lyrics.
Well, obviously Waterloo is both a famous battle, and also the name of a song by the Swedish popular music act named Abba, as well as a train station. The rest of the lyrics do not specify or give any real clues as to which of these it is referring to...

That is definitely the beauty of it, such a simple but effective song. Absolutely love it, although World in Motion is my favourite. Apart from being a great song, I wonder what Ian Curtis would have made of the transformation of his other Joy Division members after his death.

I think it is extolling the virtues of the close family bonds engendered by eating a bucket of vindaloo.
