I really want a beer this evening. 17:43 - Jul 7 with 3251 viewsnoggin

I'm on holiday and England are in the SF. I haven't had a drop for 4 and a half months and I know now that I can stop easily enough tomorrow again. What should I do?

Don't think I'm an addict but I do think I have alcohol intolerance and a liking for beer. Gave up because it was affecting my work being tired and anxious all the time.

sorry no offence intended mate

Alright Noggs?

I’m a bit Jekyll and Hyde when I drink. I can go from cuddling everyone in sight to someone saying something that I don’t like and becoming a bit of a dick.

I shouldn’t drink. I haven’t since the Fleetwood match last year. I fall off the wagon every now and then. I know that it’s exactly how my father was. He ended up dying by himself in a flat in Grangemouth having not spoken to his family for a long time.

Beer and football does go rather too well together though doesn’t it? I wonder if I should give up both to ensure that I’ve given up the alcohol….

Heineken 0 is delicious - by far the best Non-alcoholic version of the main brand.

Why not have a cheeky bifta instead?

Yeah I watched the game. Sort of. It was buffering like I was watching porn on dial up connection. It even did it as Kane was about to take the penalty!

Well I hope you at least got a climax from that!

Hopefully get a better spot for the final.

I haven't given up beer but have cut back a lot since getting pretty sick with depression last year, and i'll probably be living with it for the foreseeable now. I find watching football to be a real trigger to make me want to drink, just by association. Luckily the euros are on at 5am where i am and i have two kids to look after the next day, so i don't. I'm probably not telling you anything you don't already know but i pay attention to my what i associate with beer (football, Fridays, Saturdays, 'having a tough day') and remind myself that the craving is just through association - a learned response. There was a great interview with Matt Piper on Football Ramble where he said his rule now is never drink alone. Socialising for me is really the only legit reason to do it now.

Good on you for making the right call.

The best (by a country mile) 0% beer is Brooklyn - i bought mine from Waitrose but it will be available elsewhere. Give it a try. It worked for me when i needed to stop.

Hey Noggin….

I’m the same….

When first real lockdown came, last March, I thought I’d either be getting regularly sh!tfaced at home or not having a single drop.

When I broke it down, I only ever really drank when I was with my mates or the kids football parents post-match pub wind-downs etc. So as these things weren’t happening any time soon, I decided to have a go at not drinking whatsoever.

Noticed very quickly how much money I was saving by not having nice bottles of malbec in the house.

16 months without a drink (bar a couple of glasses at Xmas lunch) and not missing it at all.

Am sleeping better and have more energy generally. Less agitated and feeling happier too.

The real test was meeting with mates in the pub for the first time in ages last month. I was in the mindset of if I fancy a beer, I’ll have one, no worries. I opted for soft drinks all night. Nobody took the p!ss, I didn’t feel excluded and I didn’t have a 48 hour hangover, either.

I don’t really know what the point of this post is but I just wanted to say it’s OK wanting to drink but opting not to. I think.

Thanks for the kind words. I went to the pub for the Ukraine game and had a couple of 0% beers. I really didn't want a drink but left at half time because I wasn't enjoying sitting with friends who were half cut.
Very good point about saving money. In the last 4 months, I have been paying the money saved, on my mortgage. It has been a, not insignificant, sum. Being able to see the financial benefits definitely helps.
I've volunteered to work on Sunday and so won't be home until an hour before kick off. I think sitting at home all day, waiting for the game, would be difficult.
I have 5 years until retirement and would like to do those years sober. After that, who knows.
