Hard to criticise the manager when he has been vindicated on tactics 23:20 - Jul 11 with 1639 viewsZXBlue

throughout.

But

1- It was an error not to bring Grealish on at about 65 minutes, when we had started playing entirely in our own half and needed to move the game up the pitch

2- It was trying too hard to be clever, to bring penalty takers on with 30 seconds to go. It takes 15 minutes to burn off the initial adrenalin, and a similar time to get muscles absolutely warm and relaxed. Not to mention the mental side. No one has practiced taking those penalties cold, rather than at the end of a training session, one suspects. Incredibly difficult, especially for very young players who have not been in big penalty shootouts before.

We were too negative from half time onwards.

Oh and Geroginho should have been sent off. But it probably made no difference.

Saving two subs for penalties and then both missing makes him look foolish.

Hindsight and all that jazz though.

Think Southgate was naive in his decisions from second half onwards.

I've said exactly the same on another thread re penalty takers who haven't kicked the ball, adrenaline etc.

Huge huge mistake. You do not have players who have not kicked a ball take a pen. Crazy crazy decision

I understand the idea, and the bravery of taking what could have looked a clever decision.

I think he will learn from it though. It was wrong, and failed to deal with the fundamental pressures involved in shootouts.

My concern is today's performance was very similar to the Croatia match three years ago, as though he hadn't learned his lesson. Can he now learn a lesson to get us through the qualifiers and then onto the World Cup?

Correct, it's hard to criticise so I won't. A massive ask on a couple of young players, but we went there and it didn't work out. I wouldn't have, but then I didn't get us to a final, so am in no place to criticise.

I don't mind about tonight at all. I do worry about what's next though. The pundits are all assuming this is a bump on the way to better things, but that's far from a given. Tonight could easily be our high point.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

No. He's flawed. He's done an awful lot of good and has changed the whole culture of the England team, but we now need someone to take us onto the next level

Or, he has learned through the experience. Experience that Mancini already has.

Like George Burley for instance.

If he was learning through experience then he wouldn't have made exactly the same errors tonight that he made in the semi final against Croatia.

Saka not Grealish was an error, Henderson added nothing and Sterling stayed on too long if not taking a pen. Was not his night. Bringing on youngish players just to take pens was flawed. And a 19 year old on the final pen to keep us in the match - really!!

What has he learnt since the last tournament? He's still slow to react to opponent's tactical changes and he still has no real plan B.

And at least Burley learnt to play exciting football..

Funny how there's suddenly so many experts in how to manage a final ...

No wonder England struggle with such crap support.

What are you on about? You started this thread expressly saying how Southgate should've have managed this final differently.

Football is football. A final or a kickabout it's all the same game.

We were way to negative throughout but kept getting results so hard to be too critical. Who knows, if we had been more positive we could have still got the results bit with more style and conviction. England have wasted another glorious opportunity by being way too cautious and playing not to lose. We had one shot on target at home in the final of the Euros. Not nearly good enough imo.

Yeah, can't criticise him too much for the tournament but there always is a worry with him. Far too slow in reacting to the state of the game, we barely had a kick after 2 minutes and he waits until after their goal to make a change when we were taking onslaughts of Italian attack.

Really don't understand bringing on 2 young players who have barely featured all tournament for decisive pens and putting all the pressure of a final pen on a 19 year old who's just starting his career. He got a lot wrong tonight.

Italy deserved it though, been the best team from the start and had total control of the final. Fair play.

A young side overachieved a bit. Be pleased, it bodes well.

Winners learn from near misses.

Although it is hard to criticise Southgate, seeing as he got us to the final, it was the same failings that saw us lose the semi in 2018. We tried to sit back on a lead and got overan in midfield, yet changed nothing until it was too late. Italy were there for the taking, especially in the first half, we should have been braver, and we would have won in in normal time.

Hurting tonight so no going to post too much - but also not going to dwell on it. This post pretty much sums it up, but no manager is perfect. If every manager made no mistakes, every game would be a draw. Unfortunately, it's football

You've never played in a serious sporting event have you? That's just stupid.

What so the rules change depending on the level you're at? You're the stupid one if you think that, or maybe you can't read English

Didn't answer the question, did you?

What on earth do rules have to do with it?

Oh dear. Let's put it down to drink and disappointment.
