Nice. I put a certain amount each month in Trading 212 and just buy whatever has fallen most in my portfolio. All companies I think are futureproof or on trend (clean energy etc).

May I ask what sort of return you get on this policy and what sort of risk level you are choosing? Feel free to pm if don't wish to answer in the thread. I may have some money to invest and am wondering whether to go with a financial adviser or whether there is a better option.

Reminds we of a story told by an old friend. He visited France in the mid 60’s and purchased wine in a restaurant because it looked good value, far cheaper than the last time he had visited France in 1959. He forgot that France introduced the new franc in 1960 worth 100 of the old Francs. Insisted it was the most expensive wine had ever bought. While it tasted good the bill left him with a bad taste.

Occasional reminder that no less an authority than Charlie Munger says nearly everyone will do absolutely fine with a no or low fee index tracker.

Hard to tell at this point to be honest as the portfolio isn't very old. I sold everything in the first one I had and started again. This was only a couple of months ago. I also have two gold/silver funds which have gone down which skew everything. I think overall i'm down 6%. Take the gold/silver funds out and look purely at stocks and i'm up by about 10% I think. It's not necessarily something I would advise. I mainly do it because I enjoy it. I would definitely trust a financial advisor over me as i'm basically doing an experiment. Lots of people seem to like Vanguard funds and they have low fees so might be worth looking into. [Post edited 3 Aug 2021 13:28]

You didn't ask me, but I'll offer an opinion. I'd suggest looking at index tracking funds wrapped in an ISA - Fidelity and Vanguard are probably the most talked about. There are numerous with assorted risk levels - this morning I finally got round to moving my UK heavy portfolio into four different funds: Asia Pacific; Global Climate Change; Global Ethical Investment; Emerging Markets. Tracking (or passive) funds put money into assigned companies in set countries according to criteria on an algorithm. Managed or active funds have a person deciding what is best. Tracking funds tend to have lower charges and deliver better returns ~75% of the time (be watchful of some advertising claims). Returns are down to the performance of the products in the fund and the fee. For example, based on my fund performance numbers between 1st Jan 2020 and 30th July 2021 my funds are:- UK index tracker up 0.28% European Index tracker up 17% L&G World Climate up 27% Pacific Index tracker up 36% US index tracker up 31% And that includes the pound strengthening slightly over that time (which reduces the performance of the overseas funds). Makes the Brexit drag very apparent, doesn't it? In March 2020 these were all down at least 20%. This is important - don't put your emergency fund in equities, as at the point that you are likely to need it (recession, global pandemic, job losses) then the fund is likely to be down. My emergency fund is three months of bills/mortgage. To see decent returns you want to be putting this money away for five years. That said, I chucked some money (tax bill set aside) into my ISA last April as the US markets headed up and removed it six months later to take the profit - this was a risk, but it worked this time around.

Yep plenty of options now and stick it in an ISA, away from capital gains!
Hive mind needed on 20:56 - Aug 21 with 522 views | J2BLUE | Anyone bought anything good recently? I'm smashing the dips on Easyjet. First major European airline to offset all the carbon from the fuel they use. I know this isn't a perfect solution but the fact they do this out of their profits means they should be a step ahead in the sustainable green future of the planet.
