We could / should have won that 08:31 - Aug 8 with 2700 viewsnorfsufblue

Even allowing for gelling issues...once that equaliser went we had them rattled..

I felt that instead of really bombing forward and taking advantage of the uplift in the crowd we took a collective sigh of relief and let them off the hook.

Never mind though, I'm sure once we realise what a good side we are going to be that will come naturally and the positive is that in the past 3 years we deffo would have lost that.

I'm not sure why we didn't introduce Bonne and in particular Norwood earlier. No one was being physical with them and their defence was having a relatively easy time of it. As soon as we took the fight to them the crowd got up and the first long ball we played we scored.

I thought Pigott was doing a decent job dropping deep and recycling the ball though he wasn't having much joy in the box. Chaplin definitely should have been replaced sooner.

For all the mitigating circumstances it was a poor result, the saving grace being that a point is better than a loss.

It was a poor result though I think the performance warranted a win overall. Saying that, as the OP says, a concern is how we seemed to lose our heads at 1-1 at suddenly stopped doing the basics. Admittedly it was around the time the referee completely lost the plot, which didn't help, but we seemed to go into ourselves.

Not sure I agree we deserved a win to be honest. Think their keeper made one save of note, we didn't really create a lot. Evans and Harper looked good but the attacking four were pretty toothless. A draw was probably about right.

We started the second half moving the ball quicker, doing the switches of play sooner giving our full backs more space to run until, after we equalised Morecambe managed the game better than us, realising the ref was liable to give anything and the game became very scrappy - we need to learn from this

More positives than negatives for me

Whilst we didn't test the keeper enough we went close a few times - Evans' free kick, Piggot just over the bar from a corner, balls sent low into the box without a final touch, Norwood's free header going over at the death. That's more than can be said for Morecambe and rightly so; considering the players available to both sides we should dominate but it can hardly be considered a given when looking at the last couple of seasons.

They were half chances at best really. Happy to agree to disagree, but didn't think it was a game where we could honestly say we deserved the win.

Anything in the performance please you at all, or was it disappointing?

I thought Harper and Evans looked good.

Edit - and the first goal was nicely worked, thought Bonne did well for the second goal as well, held the defender off and it was a tidy finish.

agree about Chaplin, he did very little of note for me

Should have put Bonne / Norwood on earlier but I guess its part of the learning curve

Good to hear. Be great if we finally have a decent midfield, been a while.

Yes, making a change shortly after the first equaliser would have kept the pressure on Morecombe. Not sure we created a chance of note between our two goals did we?

Harper and Evans look well capable of being the best CM partnership in the league, probably good enough for the Championship. Just need to get the rest of the team functioning, which I'm hopeful will come.

Agree with you that we didn’t test Fatty Arbuckle in the Morecombe goal enough. Morecombe defended narrow and in depth and let us have the wings what was good was that we did try to exploit that but the front 3 looked short of match practice. Last season we’d have spent the entire game trying to thread passes through the middle and wondering why we couldn’t break them down!

Harper and Evans look a class act!

From the snippets I’ve seen, and then comments on here, I think there is a case to be very optimistic for the season.

I think there is, although on the whole I think we were poor for large parts of the game yesterday. There's signs that if/when it clicks we'll be good, as with the first goal, but the front 4 looked very disjointed and I wasn't overly impressed with any of them individually. Defence needs work as well, Penney I don't think is the answer at left back and we could do with an experienced head at CB.

They were disjointed because they've never played together before. And aren't fully match fit because it was the first game. I said this was going to happen.

I was getting shouted down yesterday for saying the players need time to gel. But regardless, why make a point about them being disjointed when it's obvious they would be?
