Probably the biggest concern for me over the last two games.... 22:29 - Aug 17 with 1368 viewsolimar

has been the complete change in approach from the positive signs we saw in the first game of the season.
Against Morecambe, there were lots of very evident examples of things that had evidently been worked on over the summer, the blueprint ideas that Cook was clearly looking to impose- i.e. fullbacks pushed up high, CBs playing the ball out to CMs and they in turn spreading the play left and right to those fullbacks. Then when the opposition broke, the two CMs covering back to help the CBs, with the fullbacks up the pitch.
On Saturday and, worryingly, even more today, a lot of our player stemmed from the CBs playing the ball between each other, out to the fullbacks and then down the line, or back inside to the CBs. And the entire back four sitting deep doing this. It is exactly what we saw with Lamberts team last year and offered so little penetration.
You could almost say that its about the players reverting to their old habits and needing to gain more confidence in the style of play, but these players dont have old habits, they werent here and any habits they do have are the exact ones we want- its why they have been specifically purchased, at expense, to make sure we can get the best ones for that.

So why has that happened? Has Cook seen something in the team that he doesnt like and has changed the approach, surely not at this point, given the players he has been able to bring in?
Is it simply a different strategy away from home? IF so, why line up with the same formation?

Its concerning as, for a manager who was so very clear about his approach, about the style he would play, and almost dogmatic about that, I wouldnt expect that to be happening at all.

I've not watched any of the games yet but we can't keep letting in 2 goals.

Is the defence any good and they just need time to "gel"?

The longer he goes without a win, the more it'll start to look like it wasn't the players who were the key issue behind our on-pitch troubles at the end of last season.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

I’d argue it’s the midfield that’s the bigger problem. We simply don’t create enough chances.

Can't think why players might have an issue playing for someone who has a serious problem with taking personal responsibility.

And added to that, the longer we go without a win, the more we might see these kind of radical changes to try and get any sort of tune out of the team. When that starts happening, the writing is on the wall.
And introducing Jackson, whilst starting Donacien at right back, arent good signs.

Think Id agree with that. As well as the disjointed front 4 that arent connected.
Both of which were issues last year too, with poorer (supposedly) personnel.

I dont think defence is such an issue- Burgess improved that part immeasurably and so far Ive thought Penney has been decent and we know what KVY can do (except he isnt fit).
Edmondson will only help that.

This sounds worryingly like it could have been written in the Paul Hurst era.

I'd argue that we haven't yet had the defence play.

KVY Edmundson Burgess Coulson

Have we even had 2 of those play together in any match yet?

We need to get that 4 fit and playing and then keep them fit.

Occasionally losing 1 and having someone cover is going to be much different from only ever having 1 and relying on 3 (different each time) covering.

Our defence wasn't a big problem last season.

We don't know how good Edmondson or Coulson are yet.

I think this is a bit unfair, but just to throw it out there:

ITFC manager win %ages:

Keane 34.6%
Jewell 34.1%
Lambert 32.7%
Cook 23.5%
Hurst 6.7%

(and PC's may be worse, as this is off wiki and probably hasn't been updated).

Harsh given the circumstances around the takeover, but then he has been here for more games that Hurst and we were happy enough to judge him.

But needs time to work with this new group of players.

This shouldn't be down to player habits, given that Cook has signed 16 new players so far.
