I shall just park this Guardian comment here I read this morning, and say nothing.

"Ipswich CEO Mark Ashton appointed himself head of recruitment when CEO at Bristol City and proceeded to sign players left right and centre whether or not the manager wanted them or they fitted any playing plan, leaving a bloated squad and wage bill. We managed to ship out a dozen or so in the summer but are now financially hamstrung.

He is not qualified for the role but loves the buzz of a signing and it's invariably him not the manager who is pictured with the players.

At the end of the window he will do an interview about what a great job he has done but as things go wrong on the pitch he will disappear.

If results don't improve he will sack Paul Cook and replace him with a patsy who will suck up to him.

Cook is a pretty straight talking guy so I can envisage a public falling out at some point in any event. But Ashton is a mate of the owners so he will not be held accountable.

Good luck to Ipswich fans, loved your club since the great days under Sir Bobby but do be sceptical about the man running your club."

Great, more Bristol City fans drivel on here.
Being in the Guardian does not make it accurate.

Have you all heard From Ashton outside of transfer dealings btw? No? Didnt think so.
Oh I guarantee, if you had played 6 won 6, you would be hearing from the slimy weasel every couple of days.

If this form goes on, you wont see head nor tail of him till the next window.

We’ve heard ten times more from him than the previous owner, we weren’t even allowed to see a picture of Marcus for like 5 years! We’ve had him talk about improvements to the stadium and the pitch.

You really fail to understand how rubbish our previous owner was, we’ve not had a CEO for nearly 20 years, previous owner did 3 days a month at the club and had his lawyer mates installed for daily running but all decisions from buying cleaning products to player transfers had to go through the owner in those 3 days a month he was here.

We had a series of Chief Execs under Evans, really until Clegg left (in 2013) which was when Evans took a more hands on role. There's no need to rewrite history. Bowden and particularly Clegg had a good degree of autonomy up to that point. Clegg didn't deliver and was never the right person for the role.

Consistent in Evans' tenure are three things. Bad managerial/exec appointments, taking too long to change things up and spending/wasting a lot of his own money.

Perhaps the City fans knew a bit more about him than we do. Seems to be going to a similar plan so far.

Regardless of this article in the Guardian. When Ashton first spoke t9 the fans after Cooks appointment, he stated that Cook had given him a lengthy list of the specific players he wanted. So this kind of goes against what this article is saying doesn’t. It.

… actual management system at the club and the spans of control

For example what is Ashtons responsibility on the playing side, what is Andy Rolls actual role and influence on player decisions

I think Ashton only became heavily involved in the footballing side and recruitment until after his own first direct manager appointment

I dont particularly rate Ashton and said as much at the time but in his favour he will have the pick of managers at our sort of level due to our finances.

It's a public comment.

To be honest we might as well enjoy it, it's going to be the Mark Ashton show for the next two months with recruiting a new manager and then the transfer window.

Maybe it’s a good thing if Ashton did sign some players…. because we’d a have a completely new squad signed only by an ousted manager. Some of those signings didn’t make sense to Cook’s setup - Pigott doesn’t look comfortable on his own up front and we’ve got a bunch of midfielders who don’t fit into a Cook team.
There’s some good players there. Do we get a manager with a mind that his setup will suit the existing squad? There’s bound to be some that won’t fit whoever we get.

Certainly reservations about Ashton, based on feedback from Bristol City supporters plus a spell at Watford previously, signings over the summer seemed random and whilst half a dozen look like players from Cooks previous jobs, another half a dozen feel very much Ashton's signings, the rest may well be an amalgamation of the two parties, do feel the dashboard approach has been used ie signing players who previously were in Divisional player of the year sides without actually seeing if they fit into the playing style.

Do also dislike the high profile nature whilst achieving a good result and then completely disappearing off the radar when things turn less favourable.

I hope there is no interference and trust the board are monitoring not just the manager/players.
