An honest and genuine apology with no squirming or wriggling.

I have to say that I was so disappointed when I heard Rafiq had made those comments. Apology or not, still really disappointing.

We all do and say daft things when we were young though.

It seems the media sense a few public hangings here. These media lot must have POTUS stylee glass windows in their houses.

That’s true but he’s made a full and frank apology which seems genuine. I think the important thing is to admit it, apologise, learn from it and move on, as the old saying goes “let him who is without sin cast the first Stone”

Solomon didn't suggest you were a racist. He said "For all of us".

Because he replied to my post. If you want to put a general message, just reply to the Op, then no one can be confused or insulted unintentionally.
Not sure how you knew he wasn't in some way referring to me, but thanks anyway.

Apologies if you read it that way, it was a generalisation. Sorry if this inadvertently offended you.

Thanks.

I can't agree, the most important thing would have been for him to admit it before his tweets were made public. When he was making his claims of racism he should have also stated that in the past he had made racist/antisemitic remarks which he truly regrets as he knows how hurtful they can be having been on the receiving end.
He is only apologising because the tweets surfaced.

Can you recall all of your social media posts from 2011? I know I can't.

Okay. I disagree that it's likely he would clearly remember making those posts 10 years ago.

Whether he can remember or not, he once subscribed to racial stereotypes that are applied to people of another race.

As victim of racism himself , he seems mature enough to reflect on how he felt when he was racially abused and how what he posted would cause Jewish people to feel the same way.

People are far from perfect. That he has learned, been man enough to accept that his words were wrong and apologised should be enough.

I don't disagree with any of that, I simply disagree with the notion that he'd be able to remember posts he made on social media in 2011 and should have fessed up pre-emptively. Presumably the fact that whoever dug these up had to go back to 2011 would suggest that there's no more recent skeletons in his closet, it's not like the posts were from 2 weeks ago where you would expect him to be able to recall making them.

That doesn't excuse him and he doesn't feel it should either by the sound of his apology. I'd like to think that anyone who is similarly confronted with things they said in the past that were clearly racist, sexist or homophobic would do the same rather than trying to deny or excuse their behaviour.

It would appear that there are favourite types of racism.

There was a report posted this morning by ABB about how some Tory councillors left a meeting in Ipswich because they were being called racists for not supporting a motion on the definition of Islamaphobia - because "there were significant differences between that motion and one adopted unanimously last year expressing opposition to antisemitism"

Although the same article also says: "It had been drawn up by politicians of all parties in a group co-chaired by Conservative MP Paul Bristow - and was closely based on the antisemitism policy that had won a united front at the council".

Given the Tories' relationship with Islamaphobia I know which of those two statements seems more plausible to me.

Am I being a bit thick here (apologises if I am) but he Rafiq has been "caught" saying this and there is evidence circling around about it.

A lot of the stuff stated by him earlier in the week, there isn't any texts/tweets/whatever else about it? (i'm not saying these people are innocent because of it).

My point is, people saying "He has at least made a geniune apology". Well he's had to really hasn't he because there is no hiding away from it?

Anyway, these seems to be a witch hunt of old tweets etc. Where is it going to stop. I think a lot of people are different from say 18/19 to late twenties 30s+

So a "relationship with Islamaphobia" is ok as long as someone has a bigger one.
Thanks for clearing that up for me.
Just so that we are clear, I am not a Conservative voter and I didn't bring either party into the thread.

"relationship with Islamaphobia".

I think you probably need to go away and read up about Islamaphobia and the Tory party as you don't seem very clued up on the subject, given that your response to my post was "what about Labour?". It shouldn't take you long to find the information you need on the scale of Islamophobia and Islamophobic views amongst the Tory party and their voters.

Look, it seems pretty obvious that..... on 13:34 - Nov 19 with 773 viewsBloots

....everyone in the world ,apart from 2 or 3 people on here, are racist.

Everyone that is alive, dead, and perhaps those people that aren't even born yet should be cancelled.

Apart from the 2 or 3 people on here, obviously. They are great.

End.

Plenty of people have made an art of apologising without really apologising when it comes to historic incidents like this. Vaughan is still denying ever saying anything racist despite three eye witnesses confirming the same version of events.

Azeen Rafiq seems to have made a full and Frank apology for his past behaviour rather. Why would you doubt the sincerity of that?

How do any of us know that, given his revelations this week and the criticisms of other people’s apologies, he is not just learning from experience and making sure his apology says exactly the right words?

Truth is that none of us know what he really thinks - only what he says. Plenty of people say things to me and sound totally convincing and sincere, but I find out later they don’t really mean it. Like we all do at times, they say the right things to get the effect they want.

I’m not saying he’s not sincere - only that his words alone don’t tell us that.
