Covid sham - Work from home 12:55 - Dec 15 with 1173 views | chrismakin | As mentioned the other day, my firm form a group of companies who won a government contract to assist with a certain requirement. Although the governement guidance states work from home, the DWP have refused to allow us and all other firms under the same umbrella to do so. We now have 6 members of just 20 staff at home with positive covid tests in the last 5 days, no idea how many of their 10 customers a day each they could have infected. It's incredible you can have work from home yet the governemnt themselves don't even allow you to. BTW, we have customers asking not to come to the office due to the pandemic, but we have no choice but to tell them if they don't, they'll get sanctioned on their UC due to DWP guidance.

Not sure that's an excuse. It's recommended and he can do it so he should be allowed to do it for the good of everyone. SB

And for a govt contractor - to be told by the govt not to follow it's own guidance - seems absurd to me.

Covid sham - Work from home on 13:18 - Dec 15 with 938 views | factual_blue | It's to do with IT security and confidentiality. IT has to pass stringent tests before it's licenced by DWP for use. And as the contracts might expect DWP to pick up the tab, they won't do it. (I speak as one who sat the other end of your contract for several years). Most of the DWP staff at the sharp end will have to be in the office too BTW; there won't be the cash to provide them with laptops, and in any event they wouldn't be given access to customer-related systems off-site. DWP doesn't have the risk appetite for that. You can't, for example, take a screenshot on a DWP computer (unless, of course, you know the workround that you can get disciplined for using). See my post for the dull, money-driven explanation.

As commented on the other thread on this, it isn’t Govt policy to do that. This appears to be a rogue DWP advisory. We (FCDO) have plenty of contractors who continue to work from home as long as the work being done isn’t sensitive in nature

See my posts. All the DWP work is deemed sensitive due to the personal information about customers, including banking details.

Many other companies manage to safeguard such information whilst working from home. It's not even that difficult nowadays. It reflects pretty poorly on the DWP. SB

More specifically their ministers. They're particularly risk averse, more so since TNT lost the entire list of Child Benefit recipients a few years ago.

It’s not just DWP by the looks of it. I had to ring O2 recently and they couldn’t deal with change of payment details as were at home. I had to have someone in the office call me back. As Facters says, it may well be risk/cost based as we can see sensitive data at home with the right software. I’m guessing we are better funded than DWP though and nature of my role has always needed to see info wherever I am in the world
