2-0 down, lost the toss. Do or die ... on 19:56 - Dec 26 by XYZ | Three of the original 5 venues for the Ashes are now drop-in pitches that get tweaked each year. This MCG pitch is supposed to be much improved on the Ashes one four years ago. I'm not sure history of this in Australia is relevant - e.g. what happened on the old Adelaide pitch is of little relevance to a game on a drop-in with a pink ball under lights. Even with knowledge of recent Adelaide pink-ball tests, the ball didn't behave the way many thought it would before the game. |
Alright, alright, I give in ðŸ³! Must admit I didn't know that about the pitches; and of course games can still be ridiculously decided by the weather which is actually one of the daftest but loveliest things about cricket

An 82 run lead looking a very healthy one on this wicket and now 2 wickets down in reply.

England’s top 3 have had 21 ducks between them during this calendar year, the previous best for a country’s top 3 was 13! England have absolutely smashed that stat out the park. Embarrassing really.

Just discovered the cricinfo 'query' function thanks to Andy Zaltzman, loads of fun: https://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/stats/index.html?batting_positionmax1=3 No ducks from Australia or New Zealand top three! (played less matches though).

Edit: evidence would suggest that might not have been successful. [Post edited 27 Dec 2021 7:27]

Based on that from Jack Leach, I think not. 22-4. 60 runs behind seems like 250!

Ha, think Stokes and Root are down to deliver a bit of false hope tomorrow with a breezy partnership of 70 before the ship disappears under the waves. Another duck from Leachy as well to keep the stats enthusiasts interested. 52 now, with 54 the all-time team record for a year. [Post edited 27 Dec 2021 7:32]

This wicket seems like it’s got plenty in it for the bowlers. This is my frustration with our bowlers we had the Aussies 180-6 and they’ve been able to add another 87 with their last 4 wickets. Even though England have fought hard today that lead has put us out of the game.

Didn't see it but England have long been frustrating when bowling at the tail. We start banging it in short and forgetting what got us the wickets all through the day. That test at Lords' earlier this year against India was a good example of that. In saying that, if we could actually for once in our lives put some runs on the board, that wouldn't have mattered quite so much. Our batting line up is simply not good enough and there's not even an alternative out there. Players like Livingstone who were 'next cab off the rank' have had very mediocre first class stats in the last two years as the focus has been too much on the hit and giggle rubbish the ECB has prioritised the schedules over. A Lord MacLaurin style review of our game is badly required. This is worse than 1999 when we slipped to the bottom of the test rankings. Going through five tests of this is demoralising to watch/listen to.

Totally agree - the ECB really need to stop thinking about it as a product that generates revenue, and actually gather some expert opinion on how county cricket can produce more test quality players, and as you say have an external review that doesn't hold any punches - Tom Harrison has to ultimately be held responsible by someone for what he's doing to English cricket.

That 82 is huge in the context of the game because the wicket is certainly doing something for the bowlers. We’ve allowed them to get away from us with those 87 runs for the last 4 wickets. You’re right about our batting though, can we get enough to make the Aussies bat again? The way the Aussies were bowling in that final 45 minutes, feel it’s going to be a tough ask.

Saw a brilliant article yesterday that talked to ex England coach Paul Farbrace who said that there was a subtle change in the dictates from ECB over coaching in that coaches are now discouraged from interfering with players techniques and instead encouraged to work with them. He brought up Duncan Fletcher who watched Marcus Trescothick for a month or so before marching over to him and telling him how to change his batting method to score more runs! Also how Fletcher encourages England players to use the low press in Borh Sri Lanka and Pakistan where we won that would now be banned. Also the massive problem of young English batsman not wanting to play red ball cricket they know one decent T20 knock could set them up for life with invited to play white ball cricket all year, no slog of winter nets if your playing T20 or 10 over blast competitions. We are sadly battling wise not going to get better any time soon.

I suspect the ECB will only see it as a problem when England's home Tests no longer sell out. London is a sufficiently big market to sell out 3 or 4 Tests each year, while the provincial grounds seem to do well on the back of the "stag party" culture. I'm already booked in for 3 days of Test cricket next year. The other issue is if viewing figures for England Tests are dropping so that the next TV contract isn't worth as much.

Interesting thing on R5l this morning (early in the Adrian Chiles show) was that according to Cricinfo (? I think), the Australians' first 5 overs this a.m. were the most hostile & most ever 'expected wickets' since records began for Test cricket.

It's long been time that Jonny Bairstow should have been abandoned as a Test player. He's a great white ball cricketer, but plays far too loose for Test cricket & at 32 he's not going to get better, especially when he plays so much white ball cricket. Of course, the problem is whom do you pick instead as none of the current "up & coming" Test batsmen look up to the job. I thought Pope had real potential but his form looks to have tailed off, possibly again from not playing enough first class cricket because of the absurd schedule.
