The rest of this season. 21:42 - Jan 9 with 4457 viewsOriginalMarkyP

It's not about making the playoffs. (for me).

I accepted that they'd gone with Cook's dismal reign.

We COULD make them, I'm not ruling it out, but it's not the be all, end all.

With the players we had on our books at the start of the season I maintain we SHOULD have made them at the very least. And I still hold that against Cook if I'm honest.

But. For now I'd really like to able to enjoy the football. All I want from K-McK, is for him to keep instilling the ideas and shapes and motivations into the players that he is doing. There will be losses I'm sure. But if the general approach remains the same, the future seems bright.

So I guess what I'm saying is that I want to enjoy the moment. And not making the play offs won't spoil it for me, if we keep playing like this.

But if we do, it wouldn't half make it a special rollercoaster of a season.

(Oh, and extend Norwood's contract/take up the one year option...but I think that may have quietly been done already).

Still not overly keen on personality no. So far so good on the football side yes. Like nors. I don't like him off the field. But rate him on it. KM, doesn't fill me joy personally. But so far has done a great job. Let's hope it continues.

What do you want him to do? Cartwheels? Wear a clown suit? would that make the 4-0 win more pleasing?

How much do you 'know' of him off the field I wonder? Have you met him, are you basing your decision on an interview or two or based on actually spending time with him or spending time with people that actually know him.

I don't need to spend time with Nors not to like him off the pitch, his 2 drink driving convictions, blackface and social media antics are enough to judge.

Well he's no understanding it correctly then, I used Norwood and off the field to show it is possible to have a split opinion on an individual, you don't HAVE to like someone to appreciate what they do in a town shirt, just like I don't have to get all excited by KM's personality to be happy with how things have gone so far on the field.

Amusing to me that football fans can be the most vitriolic when the players aren't showing enough commitment or desire, yet be completely apathetic to the quest for any form of success!

Probably because back in the real world, Cook inherited a team in 7th, 2 points from the playoffs with games in hand on most of the teams above, and which had won its last 3 games. And proceeded to take us backwards to 9th. Whereas McKenna has taken over a team in 11th, 10 points from the playoffs (and having played more games than most above), and with 2 wins in 12 games

Quite the opposite indeed

…with 21 games to go and a sound infrastructure and squad you don’t think he should be equally judged? You always pull up stats without much context. Context and circumstance is key.

McKenna should be able to give the play-offs a good crack from here. I won’t be disappointed if he fails to make it and become a queen like some but he should be able to give it a good go.

My post literally outlined the context and circumstance

Cook was criticised as he took over a team on the cusp of the playoffs and took it backwards. McKenna has taken over a team miles from it, so it isn’t reasonable to demand that it’s playoffs or bust. However the expectation is still that we improve - if he takes us backwards then he would rightfully be criticised

Funny how this thread ends up on me, which someone will then say i'm posting sht again.... when All I did was reply to Marky with how I was looking forward to seeing some players involvement.

You wouldn’t have liked Alf Ramsey he was too aloof.

You’re arguing the same point but not taking into account what was inherited in terms of squad and infrastructure. Yes he should have done better and he admitted as much but look at the state of it compared to now - night and day. McKenna has a lot to do but he should still be judged on what he does seeing as we’re not at the point of the season to give free hits.

Sir Alf makes Mckenna look like Jim Carrey.

Makin would have been an early doors outer on him back then.

Totally agree with your point on Lord Norwood. But let's have some optimism and belief that we can make the play-offs. We've given managers free-passes before and look how those turned out. KM needs to improve performances and results which so far he is doing. Let's keep ourselves in the play-off race right to the end of the season at the very least.

I agree with the general point that missing the playoffs wouldn't be a serious black mark against McK. And that the main objective is to get town into a drilled, winning team, with a subsequence playoff place being a fantastic achievement (where a few things probably fall our way).

Assuming the above, and we then do miss out on promotion this year, then next year the expectation would absolutely be winning the league wouldn't it? And not in a divine-right/loadsamoney way. Would just be common sense to even the most cautious among us (me!). Interesting thought that.

I guess that outlines what a beyond abysmal job Cook did here.

He hasn’t managed to take a far better squad higher than the awful one he inherited.
