Notice Cook alluded once again to having no idea of the takeover... 11:14 - Feb 11 with 6835 viewstractorboy1978

in his first interview with Chesterfield - in case anyone needed any more convincing on the matter. Thought he was coming in to work with Evans and 6 weeks later he wasn't!

That’s not correct. The takeover was very advanced when Cook was appointed.

In Lambert’s last post match press conference he said that the takeover was imminent and that 99% of the time new owners put in a new manager. He even joked that Paul Cook was sitting in his office.

He knew nothing other than the speculation. As is now known, Cook's appointment had nothing to do with the takeover.

Cook had 8 games before the takeover. He took 9 points from a possible 24. That's almost 20% of the season. Not sure it's fair to criticise Evans for making the change given he clearly wanted to salvage the season and probably brought Cook in with the hope we'd go on a run which would likely have delayed him selling at all. Lambert should have gone much earlier obviously.

If Evans had been seriously interested in salvaging the season, he’d have booted the Lambertmeister the previous November/Dec.

Also, if he was hoping to salvage the season and cling onto the club, why was he engaging with Gamechanger? Was he hedging his bets? God knows. I’ve no idea what he was doing but the order in which changes were made has directly led to highly likely another season wasted in this rubbish division.

The best I can say of Evans was that in managing a football club he was a neglectful, shambolic incompetent. I hope his last few % in this club is bought off him sooner rather than later and his sorry 14 years can be put behind us.

Unless Cook had been walking around with his head in the sand he must have had some idea that his long term future at the club wasn't with Evans.

Evans had made it public that he was actively looking to sell his interest in the club. Everybody was talking about the possibility of a takeover.

Unless Evans said to Cook that the speculation was utter nonsense and that he was going nowhere, then at best Cook was very naive to think he would be working under Evans in the long term.

I'm sure Evans did say pretty much that to PC. He hadn't said he was actively looking to sell his interest in the club and not even that he was looking for inward investment, which was actually what he wanted rather than a takeover.

He's presumably had assurances from Evans - and what is he going to trust more? Assurances from the man who is agreeing to pay him £10k a week on a 3 year deal, or paper talk about it?

This stuff about it being in the papers so he must have known is wide of the mark for me - he spent his time speaking to the organ grinder and not the monkey - but said organ grinder in reality tucked him up

Indeed, and particularly when some of the reports were claiming his appointment was related to the takeover, which he knew very well wasn't the case.

Sounds very much like the whole situation was a microcosm of how he had run the club for years - with little leadership or decisiveness.

He shafted both Cook and the new owners really, as we were left with a new manager that was not their first choice nor wanted to operate within the ideal structure they had in mind. But both parties were stuck really - Cook wanted/had to make it work and so did the new owners, who could not replace a man that quickly who had built up a lot of goodwill with supporters and had a proven track record of success at this level.

In the end we've got the set up that Ashton etc want with the added bonus of some recruits that we had no chance of landing without Cook.

I'm not sure it's that obvious, given that his successor did worse...
