What's the story with the Tsar Bomba one? Anyone explain why that nuc impacts so much of Anglia unlike the previous nucs?

Another string in Shotley's bow too.

Tho that was before some of the most long-term harmful elements, such as fallout, were properly understood.

As for why to stock them, once invented (and several nations were working on them even before WWII) if your rivals have them and you do not, thet gives them unanswerable leverage.

The problem deriving from that is if both are well stocked and one side wishes to push their luck, you're left with a choice between backing down and everyone ending up dead. Which no rational man would risk, but an unbalanced or desperate gambler might.

Is that true, that the long-term effects were not properly understood?

It was, at least, understood that they were kill indiscriminately many thousands of civilians and surely it was understood that there was fallout that would have long-lasting effect (even if the full horror of that was not completely known).

I have this faint, but still mildly disturbing memory of being forced to watch some kinda movie about the effects of a nuclear holocaust on a small town at some point in the early 80,s. I'm not sure if they made the entire school watch it

No that was just the kids in Haverhill.

The rest of us were watching public information films on how we'd never get to meet a girl if we didn't learn how to swim, how to cross the road and how to ride a bike safely.

You did. And it still didn't answer my question.

That's not the blast zone with Castle Bravo, but the fallout pattern (which, historically, went much further and over a larger area than they were expecting). Yes, it is going with the generally prevailing wind direction.

I think the mushroom cloud for the bomba went right up to space so the plume is probably the effect of the radioactive cloud being dispersed over a wider range (carried by jet stream)

Most concerning part of that article is that the journalist doesn't know the difference between "affect" and "effect".

Amongst other errors (getting blast and fallout zones mixed up, completely garbling the yield of the larger version of Tsar Bomba).

It was, at least, understood that they were kill indiscriminately many thousands of civilians and surely it was understood that there was fallout that would have long-lasting effect (even if the full horror of that was not completely known).

The fallout is largely caused by debris from the ground being sucked up into the rising fireball, irradiated and then injected high into the atmosphere to travel long distances downwind before it falls or is deposited by rain. In the rush to develop the weapons for use, that was not really considered. The scientists were primarily concerned with getting the devices to work on a technical level.

An alternative plan for their useage was to bombard the landing beaches in an invasion of Japan, then send troops ashore directly through those areas. Radiation notwithstanding.

Bear in mind only a single full-scale test had been carried out, just three weeks before the bombs were used in action and in a very remote part of the Nevada desert, where things like fallout were less likely to be noticed.

Indeed, it was years into the post-war testing programme before people seriously started worrying about fallout and things like Cobalt-60 getting into the food chain. Atmospheric testing wasn't banned by the Soviets and USA until 1963. The French and Chinese continued to do it for a decade or more after that.

That would have been threads. It was based on a nuke being dropped on Sheffield. There is another 1960s Panorama which was banned for years about the impact as well.

Well, at least if you do go back to bed you'll be secure in the knowledge that you'll at least be safe there, so long as you also shut the windows and close the curtains.

I remember that piece of film.

I especially like the bit where if you're caught outside then find some playground equipment to hide in, or if worse comes to worst then just lie down in a hole.

I have to also add, that despite trying my best, I had difficultly hearing the difference between the warning siren and the all-clear one.

That could lead to all sorts of problems.

Can I now open the curtains? What do I do?

Same here, you would have thought they would have made them completely different sounds. I would have liked the all clear sound to have been a recording of kool and the Gangs Celebrate. Start has we mean to go on and all that

Don't forget that the reason you and many others are still here and didn't die in a 1970's/ 80's grain bin bridging accident is because of those helpful films.

Some of that wouldn't work now. Few people have battery-operated non-digital radios any more. Electromagnic pulse is likely to damage or destroy a lot of non-hardened electronics.

Growing up not that far from Lakenheath and Mildenhall in the '70s and '80s, the Four Minute Warning was a constant thing at the back of your mind.

Curiously, I heard someone using a siren like that a couple of times in recent weeks. Wonder if it was a test?

funny you say that. Some leaked Cold war invasion plans were published a number of years ago. They showed the Soviets would land at Blackpool as I recall.

Misinformation innit.

Not sure if you're joking or not.

But just in case my response was purely in jest suggesting that only Haverhill would be bombed in that way whilst the rest of the nation would be worth saving.

He would know that.

And you would know, if you're old enough, that some of those films were made with a deliberate sense of humour to make them more appealing to kids: the swimming pool one, old boy on bike who managed to live to an old age without wearing lycra.

Then there was the more sinister type like the one with the lake. The dark water and the deep voice over. That was enough to make any kid think twice about playing next to deep water.

I have posted on here several times over the years complaining that public info films no longer exist, especially after two children were rescued only last year/year before after thinking it safe to walk on a frozen part of the River Trent.

So no, definitely not ungrateful in the slightest.

Context my friend, as always, is everything.
