I am starting to get quite annoyed…. 10:13 - Feb 26 with 6516 views | WD19 | At western media types who seem to be increasingly suggesting that the Ukrainians are only ‘going to make things worse for themselves’ by resisting…..and suggestion ‘all this could be sorted and we could go back to normal’ and ‘avoid the deaths of innocent civilians’ if the Ukrainians would just agree to demilitarise and become neutral. I know we all want it to go away, but giving a bully what he wants for a quiet life never quite works out how you hope in the long run. Some in the west …..having wooed them away from Russias sphere of influence…..are now letting Ukraine down badly.

I am starting to get quite annoyed…. on 12:46 - Feb 26 by Lord_Lucan | I was thinking this morning ,if we had to arm civilians in UK with machine guns, how many would eventually be handed back or kept. |
What gun? | |

We were talking about Ukranian civilians being given machine guns to defend Kiev.

"if we had to arm civilians in UK with machine guns, how many would eventually be handed back or kept." Ahem, what gun? I ain't seen no gun. I agree not so many would find their way back to the establishment.

Can I have a decent rifle please? Oh, and a Beretta or a modern M17/18 or a glock. I’d return them safely, of course! The 1918 Webley Mk6 we found in my misses’ aunts’s house (it was in full working order in its oilcloth) would have been ok, but it was heavy and she handed it in. Grrrr.

I am starting to get quite annoyed…. on 13:57 - Feb 26 by Wacko | The reason why the last discussion went on for so long was that I disagreed passionately that I was apologising for Putin, in the same way that I believe Kohl, Herd, Thatcher, Major, Mitterand, Baker et al. weren't apologising for Gorbachev in 1991 when they negotiated the unification of Germany. A willingness to negotiate with the enemy doesn't mean you agree with them. My solution is to give Putin the assurance that Ukraine won't join NATO. Nothing more than that. It's a crap situation to be in, but that is unfortunately the compromise. This is what he's been asking for, and judging by his apparent willingness to enter into discussions with Zelenskyy, it seems he still does. I know he also wants demilitarisation of the Baltic states, but I believe that's a bluff. If making the assurance works, then war is averted. If it doesn't, and Putin then finds other excuses to invade other countries, then the assurance is torn up and, I imagine, a much more serious conflict is inevitable. [Post edited 26 Feb 2022 14:01]

Ukraine has no reason to negotiate and Zelenskyy could not be more right to not negotiate. Putin has chosen to invade a sovereign country, Putin is a fascist. No liberal democracy should negotiate with fascists. [Post edited 26 Feb 2022 20:10]

I had an uncle who used to keep a gun wrapped up in oilcloth in the water tank in my nan's loft. I'm not certain which war it was from, if any. Nor that it was strictly memorabilia.

Your position isn't one of compromise, it is one of cowardice. It isn't a solution, it is the sacrifice and betrayal of Ukrainian sovereignty. Again, it is not your right to decide what path another sovereign nation takes. If Ukraine wants to join NATO it is their decision. Not yours, not mine, not Putin's. [Post edited 26 Feb 2022 20:26]

It was probably a similar revolver. 1000s were made in WW1. It fired a .455 round and had stopping power as long as you could hit what you were pointing at. Not easy, not least because it’s very heavy. The good news was it wouldn’t jam, whatever the conditions. It was a more effective weapon than the German Luger- but the Luger looks meaner! 1000s of surplus Webleys were issued in WW2 to Navy personnel, civilian services and others so a lot were just never handed in and retained as souvenirs. My guess is that’s where The Misses’ aunt’s came from and your uncle’s.

I'm afraid the one I was talking about was more of a twin barrelled affair. The sort sometimes found on farms. But shorter. Modified. I think one of the siblings saw him and grassed him up. I used to buy comics like Battle when I was a kid and one of the main characters used to carry a Webley revolver from what I recall and what you're saying is sort of coming back. I loved those comics. They were surprisingly informative and clearly researched.

I did too. The revolver I am talking about had a ring at the bottom for a lanyard to go through. That was so you couldn’t drop it too far. I’ve fired the twin barrelled jobbies, but only the full length versions - I get the picture! Battle, Commando, you name. Staple fare for the young Churchman! Like the Roy Cross pictures (including swastikas!) on Airfix model boxes, they were beautiful bits of artwork [Post edited 26 Feb 2022 23:51]

Which shows it is nothing but a straw man misrepresentation. If a 'western media' source has pointed out the likely consequences of Ukrainian resistance, that does not equate to a thought that they should capitulate. As ever. the first casualty of war is truth.

You're replying to the wrong poster Harry. You may want to reread the OP properly.

Your solution is badly flawed. Ukraine isn't in NATO and was invaded. What Russia has done - when the dust settles down - is give Ukraine every conceivable justification to apply for membership. And it has given NATO every reason to accept them.
