Yesterday I ordered 2000 litres of heating oil without checking the price. 11:17 - Mar 9 with 10123 views | Lord_Lucan | Because I am stoopid I completely forgot about the possible price increase. December I was paying .51p a litre and yesterday it was £1.19 There isn't even much point in reducing the load because it will probably go up again. Tighten your belts and hang on tight TW4TDers - I think it's only just begun!

Yesterday I ordered 2000 litres of heating oil without checking the price. on 11:25 - Mar 9 with 5004 views | BarcaBlue | I got 1000 litres at the beginning of February and cursed the invoice. It's now 50% more. No sign of prices stabilizing so you probably did yourself a favour buying this month and not next. Was at the local supermarket this morning and they are rationing purchases of sunflower oil. San Miguel was 10% cheaper than normal though so stocked up just in case

Well I've done something daft again as usual. I've just reduced the order to 500 litres in the hope it will get me to Spring and things will be better then. In which case you can assume it will be around £2 when I reorder.

I've just got a quote for the same quantity as I'm running low....£1,200.

I'm no energy strategist but assume prices won't stabilize til after the war ends or OPEC release a load of reserves, and they're unlikely to do that til they make up lost revenues from the pandemic days.

I remember it well. My mate in Belfast was gloating that due to the size of his storage tanks he had bought enough to last him two years, I'd like to see his face in a couple of months when he needs a refil!

Fck yeah, oil on the markets went negative for a little while too. Lucan highlights a real issue, energy prices are going to go up for everyone at a time when many are struggling anyway. Our reliance on fossil fuels - imported ones too - looks ever more short sighted irrespective of the environmental damage they do too. Time to insulate Britain maybe? Or at least stick a heat pump and/or solar panel on every new house?

My overall outgoings are going to increase shortly £160 p/m at a minimum. This doesn't include the slower increases in food which are a bit harder to measure. The thing with energy is that you can't really live without it. Sure, you could turn the heating off I guess but that's not really a solution. People who are well off (and I include myself in this) can deal with the price rises but people without are going to really bloody struggle. I'm in a position where I can pay this although it's a little harder with my partner currently studying for a masters so I'm paying quite a bit each month. I don't know how people who aren't as fortunate are going to deal with it. [Post edited 9 Mar 2022 11:49]

Quite, and not just go up a little bit either. We obsess about interest rates on mortgages, and understandably, but a 1% increase to interest rates I believe would add about £80 a month to the average mortgage, which is a lot. But the rising Oil costs will add a lot more than that I imagine, especially considering it impacts energy, fuel, food products...everywhere is hit and has a knock on effect. It already has for many and shows no signs of stopping. I can't see them coming down any time soon. I think the most practical thing to try to reduce usage, rather than praying to the gods for the price to come down. Easier said than done of course, but I'll be turning the radiators off from Spring and reducing the thermostat right down.

He's lucky, my tank was only about 6 months worth of cover, if that over winter. Hopefully he's tucked those savings away and puts it towards filling up next time.

I just looked at my February energy bill and it was £310 - and I guess prices will rise from that. Genuine question people - is that high? I'm not sure how I can cut down really.

When the price cap ends my energy bill is due to go up from £161 a month to £380ish - it's currently edged up to £210 for this month but effectively got to find more than £200 a month extra, bloody tough

£300 a month sounds high to me. Think the averages are around £150 - going up to £200 shortly. Is your heating on during the day? If so, that will make a large difference. I set mine for 2 hours in the morning and 2 in the evening - and then override it when am cold. Must be getting old as I seem to over ride it a lot more than I did say 10 years ago. And obviously how warm will count too - have mine at 18 I think - clearly the lower the better in terms of heating. And you can turn off radiators in rooms not being used. Age of boiler will effect it's efficiency. A really old one - you could defo look at air heating pump thingys. EDF site says the Govt is due to announce a £5k subsidy in April - which would make one a lot more affordable...

Apparently average for a medium home is £97 per month. So pretty high. Ours is above that but we've also got an electric car which skews things a bit.

That's quite high, but February always an expensive month if paying for usage as have heating on more.

It's a brand new boiler as we had a new one fitted when we put a granny annex on - well 2 years old. It's a fair size lump to heat to be honest but I always get concerned when people say their bill is in the 100's I'll look into this heating pump thing.

I'll be honest - I am useless with household bills - I just pay the blooming things - but I have always thought our energy costs are high. So much so that I am asking for a TW4TD opinion here as I'm genuinely concerned I'm going to hit £500 a month

We've pretty much turned our heating off (well, the thermostat never goes higher than 17 and then only when we're in the house. The rest of the time we fire up the log burner and live in the one room. Goff's oil prices increased by over 25% last week. I got a quote one day, hesitated to buy then bought a refill 2 days later and it had gone up by 10p a litre; 4 days later I checked and it was up another 20p! Things are going to be very tight for a lot of people. Food prices are going to increase hugely because of cost of grain and production costs (nitrogen fertilizer has gone from £250 a ton last spring to £750 this spring!) and we all know that energy costs are sky rocketing.

I have a couple of tourist apartments in the Pyrenees and the energy bills are becoming untenable. I spoke to my electrician mate and he said to install limiters, €200 a pop and guests can't whack up the central heating over a programmed maximum. I was thinking 23 degrees max, is that a fair limit? Does anyone at home have their thermostats higher?
