Please don't think I'm trying to be clever let alone arguing.

My head is swimming from that article and I'm far from thinking straight, let alone calmly and calculatingly.

If I'd been in charge I'd have probably got us all killed in the first week.

This level of evil is beyond all our comprehension.

The trouble is if we get involved (NATO) it’s going to widen the war, spilling over to the Baltics and/or Poland. It will cause more overall deaths (with the additional threat of nuclear strikes) than containing it to Ukraine. As horrendous as it is.

The sanctions are biting hard, and the “special military operation “ is nothing less than a disaster for Putin. I feel like there is an element of him goading NATO into the conflict in order to keep his people onside and continue the narrative that this is all the West’s doing.

In my opinion we just can’t get involved militarily aside from providing weaponry. On that note I expect Putin to issue threats if NATO and allies don’t stop providing them.

I was of the opinion that we should limit our involvement but here's the thing. We've all watched TV coverage of displaced Jews in WW11 and all that went with it, we have also all said, we'll never let that happen again - but here we are.

Now I know people can mention Africa, Yemen, China and the like but that doesn't mean we can't act as this is on our doorstep and it also involves arguably the most dangerous threat to planet destruction ever.

Most importantly - I think this whole thing has shown that Putins forces aren't all that. Reports from Ukraine say that his hardware is a pile of sh1te - although I accept that he probably hasn't sent his best stuff in to combat.

Also any nuclear exchange will blow back over Russia - maybe he doesn't care?

Anyhoo, it's all getting a bit too much to look at and stand by and he's getting on my goat.

Maybe take out the Belarus anti aircraft capability as a warning and go from there.

I suspect a Russian pilot, terrified of getting a Stinger up his tailpipe, let his bombs go at the first large building he saw.

They might have air combat experience from Syria, but the targets there weren't really shooting back.

It's a Russian strategy.

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/13/world/middleeast/russia-bombing-syrian-hospit

https://www.bostonglobe.com/opinion/2019/09/12/assad-and-russia-bombing-hospital

https://newrepublic.com/article/165565/russia-bombs-ukraine-hospitals

They targeted the 'White Helmets' in Syria also. The idea is that people will remain in appalling conditions if they have a medical backup but not if this option is removed.

On the nuclear bit, I guess we don’t know - but I think he probably doesn’t care. Maybe sees it going out in a blaze of glory dictatorial kind of way.

The guy is 69, doesn’t look healthy, acts irrrationally and is surrounded by yes men. We know he’s callous about his own people with how he’s destroyed (and continues to) their economy through sanctions. He’s also more than happy to sacrifice his conscripts to the meat- grinder!

I take on board what you say.

Although the soft twwat in me thinks that he must have loved ones he is concerned about?

Also, I'm not sure he can easily push the button without going through some chain of command and one would like to think that some of his hob nobs are already discussing how they will prevent this.

I've changed my mind.

I was of the opinion that we should not get involved as it is non nato country and also (and probably more importantly) Putin is a nutcase and there is a real risk of a nuclear expansion

But...I think we need to get involved now, we simply cannot watch this happen.

The 'not getting involved' argument is extremely compelling isn't it. But at the same time it's sickening to see what's happening. Do we try and appease or placate him and give him an out, or just say fk it and crush him? I don't know the answer and I'd hate to make that decision because of the many thousands (millions?) who could die is this all escalates to WW3 or even nuclear.

He's a bully and probably a coward at heart. I suspect he needs to be stood up to and have his arse kicked before he'll back down. But you just don't know how he'll react.

There will be underground facilities like nowhere else on Earth.

With every need you can think of catered for, including hydroponic systems to support the growing of fresh food, fresh water pools with live fish.

Filtration systems for air/water...

Strip clubs, bars...anything for the few and their own.

There will be luxury living down there enough for many years you can guarantee.

The rest can burn as far as he's concerned I've no doubt.

Whether those in the know would allow that to happen is the only hope in that situation.

Read this report on the assault on Aleppo and see if there are any similarities ( just read the hospital bit from pg 21 on ).

'As in Darayya, the pressure brought to bear on the
civilian population ultimately broke the resistance.
In the final weeks of the siege, and especially after
the hospitals had been bombarded, the civilians of
east Aleppo demanded an end to their suffering. '

Blimey, an underground city would take some planning.

I'm still hoping we've got a James Bond type behind enemy lines or infiltrated within the Russian GRU and we can take him out in a covert op. It's possibly not how it works though.

I'll stand by my original interpretation of what was going on. The readying of the nuclear forces, shelling of refugee corridors and now this despicable atrocity are all to bring pressure to get this ended.

A deal will be done. The "independent" conclaves will become Russian, Ukraine will agree not to join NATO, Russia won't default on international debts and Germany will have central heating next winter.

In exchange Ukraine will be allowed to join the EU.

A win for Putin in his (heavily censored) homeland.

A result of sorts, and hope of a better future, for Zelensky and Ukraine.

A nuclear war is averted, and the global capitalist machine (powered by fossil fuels) grinds on.

And the Oligarchs will be back at The Dorchester for a convivial Christmas fundraiser for the Tory party.

Much as it is a disgusting, sickening prospect, it is actually the best we can hope for.

The best we can hope for at present but I’m inclined to think it won’t work out that well.

If it does then great but there will be some long memories in Ukraine as well as Poland, Finland Sweden etc once this has finished playing out.

Putin is at the point of no return for me - it is up to those from within to define the course of history.

I'm not sure why we haven't seen the outrage being displayed now much, much earlier. Syria barely registered on a lot of people's radars. Certainly nothing on the scale we're seeing now. The Crimea didn't either; barely a whimper in the West despite it being an act of aggression to claim territory of a sovereign State.

On top of this others are watching carefully.

China will want to know what the boundaries are, as well as anyone else with capabilities.

If we act further or not will send a message of one or another and could define the future.

People saying now they're weighing up this and that and which sacrifice would ultimately save the most lives etc... Well how would they feel about that same notion if it meant we were sacrificed now but it saved many more in the future?

I reckon that attitude might change somewhat.

You do know regarding Syria, Iraq etc.

Location, cultural differences, the vast difference in news coverage.

Most TV channels are dedicating the majority of their programming to this.

The bias, whether we like to admit it or not, has been on show and a handful of news outlets have openly apologised for insensitive comments. You could argue it's human nature and that the reverse may well be true elsewhere in the world where nations do not feel the same connection themselves about Ukraine as we do.

It's Europe, therefore it's 'us', directly or otherwise.

We should be outraged every time a child gets bombed anywhere, I agree. But here we are. Maybe that's something else that will change in the future too.

Crimea was a funny one wasn't it, like we just resigned to the inevitable.

But there wasn't this destruction or counter fight either.

It's already been made public there are large underground facilities in the mountainous regions of Siberia funded years ago by oil companies.

I threw in the clubs and bars for effect.

If you're gonna have the other stuff then it would be daft not to.

There have also been recent reports that Putin's immediate family, (daughters etc - his parents died yeas ago), have already been moved there in case. I have no idea if that's true. Who knows on that front but it's what most would do.

Edit: in case you meant the football, I would think along the lines of 5-a-side or maybe table football.

Dunno if you've seen his personal mansion though, the one with the alleged underground rink. It's pretty impressive if you like that sort of thing.

Russia's a big place and quite possibly underground rivers around those parts?

Can't be hard with the tech and a few billion dollars.
