I noticed this on the Sunderland forum. My first ever away game was Arsenal in 1972. We won 1-0. I was struck by how grand and big Highbury was compared to PR, but thought the open terrace Clock End looked a bit rubbish.

Crystal Palace away, 1979(I think), lost 4-1 to Terry Venables team of the 80s as it was dubbed by the written press back then. Eric Gates consolation goal , was 13 at the time and lived in Sutton . Dad who knew nothing about football, bought me a large blue Town rosette outside ground then promptly paid for us to stand behind the goal...in the home end. That went down well.

4-2 win away at QPR in 2004. Darren Currie's debut, couldn't have wished for a better first away match, great win and atmosphere. Still can't quite believe we didn't go up that year. Never actually seen highlights from the game.
Man City Maine Road, the 5th Rd FA cup 1967. Ended 1-1 and a few days later they won the replay 0-3. I went up with an uncle on a coach from Woodbridge and seem to remember it poured with rain all day!

20.4.1996 Southend United L 2-1 Mike Marsh worldie won it for them at the death.
Milton scored for Town in that Jade/Burgundy away kit. Boiling hot day, anti-climb paint on the fencing in front of the stand plus some moderate football violence at the end!
amended the date on my post, it was 1996, i was confusing myself with the year we got promotion
Had to look up the details - but 31 January 1987 - Full Members Cup quarter final at Maine Road when I was 12 years old. We won 3-2 but can't find any details online about who scored for us.
My main memories from the day was that it was a spur of the moment decision by my Dad that morning to drive up and we had a great day together. My parents split up three months later - perhaps he was just looking for an excuse to get out of the house for the day.
Only just now realising it was six years to the day after I was the mascot at Portman Rd against Stoke City (31 January 1981).

Leicester away in February 1977. We lost 1-0. I hitch-hiked from Oxford & back, which was a challenge in itself & the male driver of my last hitch from near Heyford made an advance to me. I didn't hitch hike again.

Leicester Sept 83 or 84 . Think it was a draw.
We won 1-0 in 1980 (good performance, comfortable win, Wark scored I think), then from 1983 lost the next three at Filbert St 2-0, 2-1, 1-0. We then drew 1-1 and finished the decade with two 1-0 wins. Oddly, I saw all of them as I used to go with the misses’ late cousin. Usual mixture of good, bad and indifferent tempered by alcohol.

The Cambridge game I sort of hitch hiked.
I was walking to the station, aware I couldnt get a train home. My plan was to shout "Anyone driving to Braintree" on the way out of the ground.
On the walk to the station, a car of Towen fans pulled up and asked directions to Cambridge. I pointed them in the right direction and asked if they had a spare seat.
Jobs a goodun. Got to say if I heard of a 16 year old doing the same today I'd think he was an idiot.
Derby County - evening game at PR around 1967 I think. 0-2 after 5 minutes; 2-2 by half time. 2-3 within moments of the restart. Won 4-3. How could you not be hooked? I didn't see seven goals in a game until another evening match (oddly on a Saturday) when we beat Southampton 7-0.

Two things I remember about that game:
1. Mauricio - who was injured or suspended - was sat just behind me in the away end with his dad. 2. Craig Forrest was playing his first game since the January and, at the end, just after he was beaten by that worldie, as he applauded the Town fans some of them sang Richard Wright's name. Craig put his hands on his hips and looked, understandably, thoroughly p1ssed off.

West Ham United v Ipswich Town, 24 March 1978
Bad day for a 12 year old. We lost 3-0
I was at that game with my West Ham supporting gf at that time and her father. That was a truly miserable performance and rubbish day for me. I seem to remember a former Norwich player and the worlds ugliest bloke David Cross scored for them
