Nothing about Mrs Sunak on here as yet this morning.... 12:41 - Apr 8 with 4321 viewsitfcjoe

....the shine has definitely come off Dishy Rishi, and he can't handle much scrutiny - especially scruitny that is more than deserved.

Who is cranking up this stuff then? Number 10 or Labour?

Actually the top 1% of wealthy individuals pay 27% of all income tax paid. The top 50% of wealthy individuals pay 90% of all income tax paid. https://ifs.org.uk/publications/9178.
The problem is not really that the wealthy avoid taxes and in fact the more heavily taxed they are the more likely they will be to relocate or seek to avoid an unequal tax burden. This would then result in a shortfall of tax income.

The real problem is the unequal distribution of wealth or levels of income. There is much to be said for a significant increase in the minimum wage.

They pay more as they have the capacity to pay more and without it even being felt.

I'm not saying the tories are out of touch but.....

And the Tory mantra is that it is their moral responsibility to reduce the tax burden as much as possible. The most vulnerable in society should look after themselves just like those who are able to.

I would still argue that any systems that requires a small minority to pay the huge majority of taxes is undesirable. It is bound to cause social division.
What is required is a more equal allocation of wealth and income. Increasing income for the majority will also enable them to contribute to the tax base.

I have to question why someone would voluntarily pay an extra £30m in tax just to save her husband's £150k a year job.

Oh. Not just about marital harmony?

"The real problem is the unequal distribution of wealth or levels of income. There is much to be said for a significant increase in the minimum wage."

Wouldn't that require the wealthy to pay more?

A significant increase in minimum wage would bring many more people into the tax regime. They would be better off but would also be taxpayers. Ironically a significantly higher minimum wage would mean a greater tax base and potentially could lead to lower taxes. Corporate profits though might suffer.

This has triggered quite a range of responses, many of them rooted in bitter class envy and division.

I suspect that even with their tax planning measures the Sunaks pay far more in UK taxes than any of us posting to this site. American citizens are obliged to file tax returns to the USA and there are tax treaties in place between the USA and the UK which govern the tax allocation between the countries. For me this is not about how much or how little tax they end up paying in the UK. They are entitled to plan their tax affairs to their advantage, just as you and I might save into a tax efficient vehicle such as a SIPP or ISA.

What does offend me is the fact that our rules on non dom status are out of date and need a major overhaul. If retained the max non dom period should be limited to 5 years.
In addition anyone who is a foreign national or is, or is a spouse of a non dom, should automatically be disqualified from holding public office in the UK.
Also politicians and political parties should not be allowed to accept funding from foreign nationals or non doms.

The issue can be be easily resolved with a few relatively simple rule changes.

As a number of posts note the outrage is partly manufactured and driven by political considerations however as the OP says the shine has definitely come off dishy Rishy.

A few things;

1. "the Sunaks pay far more in UK taxes than any of us posting to this site." Are we supposed to be grateful?! That's just a pathetic point. You're either rich yourself or a forelock tugger. We don't earn anywhere near what they do.

2. What they're doing isn't remotely comparable with saving in an ISA.

3. It's not bitter class envy to see someone bending the rules to avoid paying tax like the rest of us have to. It's just about what's right. She's played the system. How anyone (unless in a similar position) can defend that is beyond me.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

And worse, they (or he) is partly responsible for setting the rules that they are taking advantage of.

it is similar to their attempts to change the law when Patterson broke it rather than deal with him.

No we’re not supposed to be grateful. However they are following rules just as we follow rules. We should be highly pissed off at the rules, which need to be revised asap.

We can vent frustration at the Sunak’s, or other rich individuals, but the scandal will pass and be forgotten. Until or unless the rules get changed it will then get repeated.

That’s my key point.

Ps By the way there are any number of million pound tax free isa pots out there. (Unfortunately mine isn’t one of them) :)

Second edit. Pss Rishi Sunaks best mate is married to Allegra Stratton (remember that name). The families are godparents to each other’s children. Now there’s another stick to beat him with.
