If he held a green card then he has to resign. His position would be untenable.

I expect there a millions of non doms 'O am not surprised by any of this, nor even now the forelock tuggers who will blear out their defence of such ofios specimens of himanity.

Was Blubba the gut not aware og what happened on Crimea on 2014 or Salisbury a bit later ?

Nearly £2m trousered by him and his cabinet since 12019, yet now tell us Putin is a very naughty man.

As with Saville they can continue taking the pss, because too many in this country still have Downton Abbey type mentality when it comes to their 'betters'.

Has he? I’ve been offline and media free since lunchtime.

He was chancellor in 2021. He was a British MP for a few years before that. He has to go.

Edit. I wonder if this could bring the whole government down? Johnson must have known.

That’s a very quaint pre-2019 view you’re hanging onto there buh. If rules mattered to this lot Johnson would have resigned 17 times by now.

I hope you’re right, but suspect resigning will be the last thing on his mind. It’s not the way authoritarian’s play. Question is l, can we get them out before they fully corrupt the system and go full Ergodan/Orbán/Putin? People think it can’t happen here, but it’s already happening with attacks on the truth, national institutions and a free media. It’s in the balance whether this will get worse or whether we’ll regain some semblance of a functioning democracy imo.

As to the US green card question

"On Friday, Mr Sunak admitted he had also held a US green card while living in Downing Street. Green card holders must pay tax in America and declare their intention to make the US their permanent home. "

Doubt he has done either.

This is nothing like the Major Cabinet. That was all being spanked by matron at the weekend for being a naughty boy, taking the Au Pair up the Oxo Tower without the wife's knowledge, and the such-like.

This is the systematic dismantling of the system of checks and balances, corruption that runs into the billions of pounds, working for a foreign Government (and one seen as a potential enemy, at that), and generally snorting lines that "Rules are for the little people and don't apply to us!"

We are REALLY going to regret the fact that we no longer have the European Court of Human Rights to protect us from them.

(Someone will be along in a moment to tell me that I am wrong, and that the UK is still a member of the European Court of Human Rights, and I will have to point out again that the rulings of the ECHR only have weight when they are transcribed into European Law, and that, of course, the British Government are now immune from that inconvenience.)

It is the frequency of the 'scandals' that I had in mind not so much the seriousness of the offences (as you highlight).

With Sunak it was perhaps thought that he was above this corruption, lying and general incompetence - yet is now seen to be part of it. In a big way. Stating that his wifes tax affairs are not connected to him, only for it to be revealed a day or so later that he is a beneficiary in those same trusts.

It is understandable why Johnson was ignored at the recent meeting of heads of state. He was taking Putins shilling barely a few moneys previous, and defending Putin after he launched the invasion of Crimea. That the money was certainly connected to Johnsons later anti EU stance is now accepted wisdom.

Putin wanted to break up the EU. Johnson wanted to be PM. That he was no more suited than Douglas Bader running the 100 yards hurdles did not faze him. He had been a failure in every other political post, so why worry.

To ensure there would be no serious leadership challenge, he selected a cabinet of no hopers. Patel, Dorries and Truss - Hancock, Rabb, Williamson, and now Sunak. All 'useful idiots' for Putin.

As were UK voters who believed their lies.

Well done Harry. You’ve taken a thread where there was a consensus that Sunak should go, then soiled your pants by repeating Russian propaganda that Johnson was ignored at the recent EU meeting, which was busted in your op at the time

They obviously planned for this eventuality as she came out pretty quickly to say she would pay UK tax and presumably hope to kill the story. I imagine quite a lot of people in government don't want the non-dom status loophole in the spotlight as it is frankly indefensible. I don't know many wealthy people but one I do know is a member of an incredibly wealthy American industrialist family, worth many millions, has lived in the UK for 30 years and pays tax at non-dom rates. Not good.

This has triggered quite a range of responses, many of them rooted in bitter class envy and division.

I suspect that even with their tax planning measures the Sunaks pay far more in UK taxes than any of us posting to this site. American citizens are obliged to file tax returns to the USA and there are tax treaties in place between the USA and the UK which govern the tax allocation between the countries. For me this is not about how much or how little tax they end up paying in the UK. They are entitled to plan their tax affairs to their advantage, just as you and I might save into a tax efficient vehicle such as a SIPP or ISA.

What does offend me is the fact that our rules on non dom status are out of date and need a major overhaul. If retained the max non dom period should be limited to 5 years.
In addition anyone who is a foreign national or is, or is a spouse of a non dom, should automatically be disqualified from holding public office in the UK.
Also politicians and political parties should not be allowed to accept funding from foreign nationals or non doms.

The issue can be be easily resolved with a few relatively simple rule changes.

As a number of posts note the outrage is partly manufactured and driven by political considerations however as the OP says the shine has definitely come off dishy Rishy.

Good point well made. On a general note, why wouldn't anyone avoid paying more tax than they are legally obliged to?

Because there comes a point that you are so rich you couldn't actually spend all the interest on the money/investments you have and you understood that taxation actually benefits those poorer than you?

However, generally the richest still limit their liability while poorer people cannot afford the accountants to advise us of all the loopholes to exploit.

Actually the top 1% of wealthy individuals pay 27% of all income tax paid. The top 50% of wealthy individuals pay 90% of all income tax paid. https://ifs.org.uk/publications/9178.
The problem is not really that the wealthy avoid taxes and in fact the more heavily taxed they are the more likely they will be to relocate or seek to avoid an unequal tax burden. This would then result in a shortfall of tax income.

The real problem is the unequal distribution of wealth or levels of income. There is much to be said for a significant increase in the minimum wage.
