That was an awful tweet from Maugham, and he's gone down in my estimation because of it. Even his correction later didn't really make it better, when a straight up apology would have been the right thing to do.
This government is bloody awful in so many ways, but the cabinet is as diverse as I can remember so accusations of racism are miles off. |
I really loathe and detest posts like Harry’s and Maugham‘s. They are defining people by the colour of their skin.
It like when people attack Priti Patel as the daughter of immigrants when objecting to her awful policies. She shouldn’t be defined by her parents past refugee status or her ethnicity. It’s like saying that this ‘brown girl’ shoukd be more grateful we let her parents in.
She shoukd be defined as the vile loathsome individual she is. Regardless of her ethnicity.

I'm with you, generally been supportive of Maugham but that's an awful thing to say and especially not to just apologise for. |

I will say on Priti Patel, I don't think it's unfair to point out the policies she puts in place are essentially pulling the ladder up from people who were in her parents position. It doesn't define who she is, but she did directly benefit from something which she now wants to / is removing. |  |

He’s one of the four candidates (along with Javid, Mordaunt and Tugendhat) who would be electorally successful. Their options are getting more and more slim - there’s a high chance they will go for someone unimpressive like Truss or Sunak or a complete nut job like Braverman. |  |
