Lady Dollers and I went for a walking tour of Highgate in the sun yesterday 10:55 - Jul 11 with 1418 viewsThe_Flashing_Smile

Although we gave up at the cemetery. £10 each to get in, or £15 each if you want a tour! £20-£30 to look round a graveyard! I wouldn't be seen dead in there at that price.

Mildly intrigued to see Karl Marx's grave but apart from that, no thanks.

I was surprised to see, on the leaflet, that both Ugo Ehiogu and, erm, Jeremy Beadle are in there as well.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Good value for a tenner I'd say! :-)

Please tell me that as you got closer to where Jeremy lay there was at least a sign that said 'WATCH OUT, BEADLE'S ABOUT'.

I'm sure he'd have found that amusing himself.

There's something very off about letting people pay to see people's graves.

Ha, well as per my OP we didn't go in, but yes, that would be good and a fitting last prank!

I thought it was worth it when I went FWIW. Tour was excellent. The north cemetery is really cool.

Hmmm, charging money to see the Karl Marx grave, has anyone told Alanis Morissette?

Yeah does seem a bit pointless without the tour; you're bound to miss something and without the stories/info/history you're just wandering around a graveyard for a tenner.

My Dad drove over 5 hours from Vegas to LA to see Al Jolsen's grave but turned up and it was shut on Saturdays***

Highgate Cemetery is a load of old, esoteric and fairly fragile Victorian monuments though so some of that fee goes on the upkeep of all that.

I'd have thought the tour money and donations would be enough. To charge people £10 to just walk around's ridiculous. The best museums in London are free, so given this is essentially a museum of gravestones I'm not sure why it's so different.

Not much changes at Highgate. All the free museums regularly rotate exhibitions etc. Not apples and oranges.

£10 is a bit steep though.
