Top 10 opening game attendances at Portman Road since 1938 on 06:16 - Jul 30 by hoppy
Today is only the 3rd opening day of this decade. The 27,374 was 2 decades ago. Did you mean this century?
Soz. Yes I meant century. Was in bed last night half asleep when this thought entered my head & couldn’t sleep till I found out. Weird like that. Maybe more excited about today then I like to admit to. <<<goes to edit>>>

That 1991 attendance! Clearly not many were expecting what followed,
Indeed. Finished the last game of that magnificent season with 26.803 with the players running around the pitch holding aloft a wonderful trophy. Found this article regarding that Port Vale game & the low attendance that day on the wonder Pride of Angiila website https://www.prideofanglia.com/page.php?page=displayImage&linkimage=sql%2Fmat

I’m sure the Tottenham game in 83 we won 3-1 with Gates bagging a brace? I remember being stood on my milkcrate in Churchman’s for that match
You’re correct I put down the previous year result (1982) when we also opened our campaign against Spurs. That fixture where we lost 2-1 with a attendance of 24,968 & finished 11th on the list.
Ps the game you remembered from standing on your milkcrate just in case you haven’t seen it for a while

Those attendances in 1991 and 1996 (I was at the second, but not the first) are sobering and a reminder of what could so easily have happened here after relegation. Instead we could be onto something really special now so let's hope we don't squander it.
