Not sure how that will work in customer service.

I would love a four day week.

My Accountants business moved to a four day week about four months ago. When I spoke to one of the Directors last week I asked how it was going and he wasn't exactly purring about its success.
It seemed that most people had opted to not work Friday that had caused an imbalance in available resource, particular as most of their customers still work on Fridays. There were also issues with continuity and communication.
Luckily for him the scheme is a trial only so it can be tweaked although trying to get everyone back having experienced the four day week may be harder.

I would happily have Wednesdays and weekends off. That would be a really nice life balance.

Hopefully enough companies stick with it to force some change.

I think one of the articles I linked said the chap had to rotate between a Tuesday and a Wednesday as the day off. As long as the company is big enough, it should work. Clearly 24/7 businesses often work a continental shift pattern of 4 days on 4 days off.

Many shops have operated half day closing during the week (but obviously had Saturdays as working days too).

If the whole country went to a 3 day weekend the issue wouldn't be there either.

It is the balance between maintaining productivity and getting the time off. I would imagine a longer working day is likely part of any realistic solution. I think most people would happily work 4 x 10 hr days instead of 5 x 8 hr ones.

Shift work. Pretty obvious. How do you think 24 hour or 7-days-a-week businesses do it?

Most people could probably already do a 4 day week. Just a matter of upping productivity with the incentive of a day off. In many cases you don't need to do that either, a lot of time in the 40 hour week is lost to looking for stuff to do, appearing busy, posting on football forums, etc.

Former employer of mine trialled it in one of the smaller territories and had very encouraging results from what I understood. It's very hard to measure though innit, in terms of output and productivity. Won't be too long until a big name announces it, they'll see it as a competitive advantage for recruitment and retention. Then others will have to follow, then it becomes a hygeine factor. See WFH.

Hope it does, this 5:2 is a bullsh1t split.

I meant hygiene, I clearly can't spell that word though ha!

As in a factor that becomes expected, the norm. They tend to make a worker demotivated if they're not included, but not necessarily something that motivates people to work harder. Example would market rate pay, or a comfortable office chair, nice working conditions etc.

Hadn't spotted the typo actually!

But not a use of the term that I am familiar with. I think you mean "the norm" EDIT or "selling point".

Hygiene definition: conditions or practices conducive to maintaining health and preventing disease, especially through cleanliness.

No, he means a hygiene factor - it’s a recognised and accepted term in the context in which he’s used it, and I think he’s right that that’s the way it’ll head too

"Hygiene factor" is a term coined by Herzberg in this context, I have heard it numerous times.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-factor_theory

I would agree the link between hygiene and this context is a little odd, not sure why he used that tbh.

I think that has also been covered, though.

Apart from the possibility of spreading the extra hours over the other days, there is the tendency for work to expand in order to fit the time available. We all know how it is when you are busy and bust a gut to get the jobs done and when it is slow and you are not. Very few places are working at the bust-a-gut rate for very long.

A hygiene factor is what should always be there/should always happen in a business, organization or industry etc. And if you don't have it then you shouldn't be involved.

It's a bit business-speak of course. But a useful idea/expression.

Pronouns: He/Him

No, he makes a good point. Mine and plenty of others jobs do indeed fit the pattern you outline but lots of others don’t, with retail being a good example. Someone sat on a checkout in Sainsburys isn’t going to suddenly be more productive as their work is dictated by people coming through the tills.

Ultimately those areas tend to be paid hourly so probably wouldn’t work in the same way anyway but it’s important to remember not all lines of work are the same

What about it?

A longer school day with the extra day off would be the best solution.

Alternatively, a pattern whereby different staff have different days off per week and students still do 5 days.

Shorter holidays but with the extra day off every week is another possibility but I am not sure that would work well. Imagine how much the holiday premium would go up by then!

Whilst different sectors have different issues, there are potential solutions (all of which will also have different challenges).

Sorry, it wasn't a loaded question. I was just interested in what your preferred solution would be.

If there were longer days and an agreed day off then presumably all parents would be able to request that as their extra day off.

Spreading staff across the 5 days is better in theory though virtually impossible on a practical level.

I am very onside with the idea of a 4-day working week. But I want to see absolutely everything covered so there's as little chance of it going wrong as possible.

That would be great. Big businesses aren't going to allow this though. For small companies where this works it would be great. The likes of Tesco are not going to go along with this because god forbid the profits are a bit lower and the shareholders don't get to cream money off the top.

Not sure why spreading staff across the 5 days would be virtually impossible. Many staff are part time anyway. It would simply mean no staff were permanently on site. In fact that would force some schools to be more aware of shared responsibilities and cover than perhaps many are now. It might struggle to work for the smallest schools, though.
