Ladapo OTT criticism 16:05 - Sep 19 with 4133 viewsSweetman

Granted Fred was pretty awful Saturday, his worst game thus far in a Town shirt. But I cannot remember him having a poor game before that. So over-the-top & reactionary saying that he should be dropped, Pigott 2.0 etc.

Come on! Cast your minds back to last Tuesday and he was one of the best players on the pitch. Won't do his confidence any good, got to stick with him.

When he's started, he's got into the speed and flow of the game.
Coming on as a sub, he didn't get that, and looked a good step or two behind

Different story at Accrington though where he came on as a sub and changed the game. His touch was poor on Saturday but the lack of pressing was a team issue/decision rather than his.

He does a lot well, allowing the forwards to find space and score goals. With that said, his control is poor compared to the rest of the team, his passing isn't great (passing accuracy = 52%) and we needed better when he came on.

He can score goals, has been given a lot of opportunities (20 shots in the league, 0 goals), but so far hasn't settled and scored in the league. It may not be his "main role", but it is disappointing so far.

I can see why people call him Pigott 2.0 from that, but he does offer more than Pigott, which is why you are defending him.

I don't think anyone hates him though, and considering he has 0 goals, from 20 shots, across 9 games, I think the majority of Town fans are very patient, supportive, and appreciate his other contributions.

Interesting. One of my work colleagues is a Rotherham season ticket holder and when we signed Ladapo he said ‘He’ll get you 15 goals’

Well yes, there are always going to be some idiots and he didn't have his best game but it's clear to see what he offers the team. Anyone comparing him to Pigott is frankly an absolute idiot.

I've championed Ladapo, for his efforts in previous matches, despite the lack of goals.
But I honestly think a bit of criticism is warranted for Saturdays showing. I'd be surprised if KM hasn't stuck one into him, and a couple of others, on the side.
You don't want to bury players. But , at the same time, standards need to be kept high. For "every" game. You're as good as your last game.. Some would argue that your as good as your next game... But two games ago? That's gone now. And he got plenty of praise at the time...
What we don't want, are players taking their foot off the pedal, thinking they can get away with it, because they did ok in the previous match..
I like Ladapo, but he was well below it on Saturday. That's just a fact. Imo.
Another fact, is that, he's got the shirt atm, in that "big man" role up front. He should be straining every sinew, to keep it. I didn't see that on Saturday, tbh.

He’s got 0 league goals and we’re 9 games in. Talk me through how you think he’s going to get 15 in his next 37, which is a goal every 2.5 games when his career average is 3.1 - 40% of his career goals coming at non-league level.

I think he’s a decent player but he’s going to have to hit a Bonne style purple patch to hit those figures.

He’s a decent striker - hasn’t found the net which of course he will be frustrated about.

He’s a handful, has also put in really good displays as well.

He was poor at Sheffield Wednesday, and of course he’ll know he let Byers go for the goal.

No need for the overreaction, but is the way of the vocal minority on social media unfortunately.

He came on, contributed in the build-up to our second, then we conceded and retreated to our penalty area and asked him to press 5 players on his own. Think we can hold judgement a bit on his effort in those circumstances.

"He’s got 0 league goals and we’re 9 games in."
- He's made 6 starts and 3 sub appearances
- He's scored 0 in 500 minutes this season
- He has 0 goals from 20 shots

"His career average is 3.1 - 40% of his career goals coming at non-league level."
- 2021—22 League One: Starts: 23; Subs: 19; Mins: 2104; Goals: 11.
- 2104 mins is 23.4 full 90-minute games.
- This is a goal every full 2.13 games.
- 2019—20 League One: Starts: 20; Subs: 11; Mins: 1860; Goals: 14.
- 1860 mins is 20.6 full 90-minute games.
- This is a goal every full 1.48 games.
- 2018—19 League One: Appearances: 45; Mins: Unknown; Goals: 18.
- We have to assume 45 full 90 minutes games, as this is unknown.
- This is a goal every full 2.5 games.

His last 3 seasons in league one have given him (at worst) an average of 1 goal every 2.07 games. This means he is perfectly capable of getting 15 goals, given your need for 1 every 2.5 games.

Furthermore, it is extremely disingenuous the use what he would have been like as a kid for what he is like now. Very few players have excellent returns as kids.

…assuming he’s going to start scoring imminently. Those stats at League One level were also when he was playing with a partner in a two up front.

I wouldn’t say it’s disingenuous to count his goals as a younger player, if we take those stats out, his scoring record looks less prolific. It’s good to see those stats though so thanks for digging them out but 20 shots in 6 games with no return extrapolated across a season means he’ll only get another 80 shots assuming he makes the same frequency of starts and sub appearances. A goal every 5.3 shots would yield the 15 needed. Possible but he’ll need to start upping his attempts and finding the net soon.

Sure, it's not a fact, but if you disagree that he was below par against Wednesday, do feel free to say so. And I don't mean that sarcastically. If people have a view that he wasn't below par, they shouldn't be afraid to air it and attempt to persuade others who have entrenched views.

Certainly I thought he was below par, but such is my respect for McKenna that I am prepared to look again and again, after which I may well find out I was just wrong. There's more than a hint of that re: Jackson. I couldn't for the life of me see why he was even still here, but McKenna saw something, and that man is very rarely wrong.

I think you missed the intent of my post. Anyway, it’s September, we’re barely 5 miles into the marathon. There’s no need to crucify players or write them off after one average performance.
