Many have said that religion isn’t to blame but man’s interpretation of it. Unfortunately, the church itself (be it Catholic or Anglican etc etc) have all been too willing to give its approval to war in order to extend its influence.
We often view Iran and places like that as backward for allowing religious leaders too much power but I don’t think we’re in a position to judge. The monarch is head of both church and state, church leaders seat in the House of Lords. All this is ridiculous. Remove the church from the monarchy and remove its representatives from the second chamber.
In terms of Iran, that protest is extremely brave. I think Iran has a very large population under 35 with many of them a lot more secular than previous generations. It may well lead to more liberalisation of that country. |  | | |

Of course it's man's ( and woman's) interpretation of religion. Interpretation can manifest itself in extremes, such as violence and terrorism. The majority of Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Christians and followers of other religions manage to interpret their beliefs in a peaceful and respectful way. Many charities have evolved from religious people wanting to do good deeds in keeping with their beliefs.
We have two posters on this board who have spoken of being practicing Christians. I believe Nthsuffolkblue recently said that his Christian beliefs have lead to him becoming more socially conscious.
Religion is not the issue. It is how people use that religion. | |

That's just daft. Guns are a mechanical weapon designed to kill. The chances are that if you have a gun you have killed something.
I would imagine that only a very small percentage of people who follow a religion have killed somebody or something in the name of that religion.

I could have worded that better. We should respect the right for people to worship a religion so long as it doesn't do us any harm.
In the last twenty years we have seen several atrocities carried out in the name of Islam. That doesn't mean Islam isn't a peaceful religion and I respect the right of Muslims to practice their beliefs. Which several million people do around the world without causing any harm.
Likewise, many atrocities have been carried out in the name of Christianity. But I'm pretty certain that the Reverend Richard Coles isn't advocating another Crusade. His biggest crime on humanity is murdering Harold Melvin and The Bluenotes "Don't Leave Me This Way". [Post edited 21 Sep 2022 11:26]
