Incredible scenes coming from Iran as women take to the streets to burn their hijab after the murder of Mahsa Amini by the morality police.

Edit. Graphic content in the next two clips.

Sadly we know from the Green movement in 2009 that the Iranian state will brutally crush any protests. These really are brave people.

But this one has got the authorities quite worried. They are promising an inquiry and the family have had a visit from a representative of Khamenei.

After all, this is not just about democracy activists, but a large chunk of the female populace and the sizeable Kurdish minority.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Brave indeed.

I’m glad no serious politicians have taken money from the Iranian state to be a mouthpiece on the propaganda machine of this brutal regime.

Unfortunately I fear it will be brutally crushed

You don't think that all regimes will act brutally when their power is threatened?

No.

Besides they have many human rights violations even when they are not threatened, so I’m not sure what point you are trying to make?

I think you may be mixing up God with Mohamed banksy. Either through ignorance or from being wilfully disingenuous.

However, by blaming God, if indeed God exists, you are excusing the actions of these theocratic despots and their warped interpretations of Mohamed’s words.

Many have said that religion isn’t to blame but man’s interpretation of it. Unfortunately, the church itself (be it Catholic or Anglican etc etc) have all been too willing to give its approval to war in order to extend its influence.

We often view Iran and places like that as backward for allowing religious leaders too much power but I don’t think we’re in a position to judge. The monarch is head of both church and state, church leaders seat in the House of Lords. All this is ridiculous. Remove the church from the monarchy and remove its representatives from the second chamber.

In terms of Iran, that protest is extremely brave. I think Iran has a very large population under 35 with many of them a lot more secular than previous generations. It may well lead to more liberalisation of that country.

Agree with all of that although obviously organised religion is an entirely man made construct. Individual spirituality would be a different matter.

Of course it's man's ( and woman's) interpretation of religion. Interpretation can manifest itself in extremes, such as violence and terrorism. The majority of Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Christians and followers of other religions manage to interpret their beliefs in a peaceful and respectful way. Many charities have evolved from religious people wanting to do good deeds in keeping with their beliefs.

We have two posters on this board who have spoken of being practicing Christians. I believe Nthsuffolkblue recently said that his Christian beliefs have lead to him becoming more socially conscious.

Religion is not the issue. It is how people use that religion.

Lose the obsession banksy. You are getting very needy again. A sign that you need to chill out off board a little more mate.

Well done for trying to hijack the thread though. Not one post expressing solidarity with those brave people taking a stand. I guess you are only on the side of oppressed Muslims when it suits you.

Indeed. Organised religion has been a wonderful way for the authorities to control the masses and still is in relatively backward countries. Unfortunately, the USA also seems to be heading back to the dark ages.

Isn’t that like saying guns don’t kill, people kill?

The sooner we eradicate religion the better.

Edit. And by eradicate I don’t mean by violent means I simply mean that hopefully time will see religion become a complete irrelevance all over the globe.

That's just daft. Guns are a mechanical weapon designed to kill. The chances are that if you have a gun you have killed something.

I would imagine that only a very small percentage of people who follow a religion have killed somebody or something in the name of that religion.

You should respect people's beliefs if they aren't doing you any harm.

I could have worded that better. We should respect the right for people to worship a religion so long as it doesn't do us any harm.

In the last twenty years we have seen several atrocities carried out in the name of Islam. That doesn't mean Islam isn't a peaceful religion and I respect the right of Muslims to practice their beliefs. Which several million people do around the world without causing any harm.

Likewise, many atrocities have been carried out in the name of Christianity. But I'm pretty certain that the Reverend Richard Coles isn't advocating another Crusade. His biggest crime on humanity is murdering Harold Melvin and The Bluenotes "Don't Leave Me This Way".
