I heard a joke about trickle down economics the other day, but I don't think that 99% of you will get it.

Wealth distribution is like the prostate. I may not really knows how it works, but I do know that if there is a trickle and not a steady flow then immediate action is required.

And too many people of a certain generation are in complete denial, and won't face the facts until it is too late.

***

My Dad died of Prostate Cancer and I know that there's a fair chance that I will, too. I am pretty passionate about nagging people to get checked out.

1 in 8 men will get prostate cancer. If you’re over 50, or you’re black, or your dad or brother had it, you’re at even higher risk.

Prostate cancer is not always life-threatening. But when it is, the earlier you catch it the more likely it is to be cured. Check your risk by answering three simple yes/no click questions here:

https://prostatecanceruk.org/risk-checker

Symptoms, which don't always ocurr (my Dad had no symptoms) are discussed here:

https://prostatecanceruk.org/prostate-information/about-prostate-cancer/prostate

An introduction to prostate tests is here:

https://prostatecanceruk.org/prostate-information/prostate-tests/introduction-to

The "bottom" line is that talking to your doctor about risk factors or some of the symptoms doesn't necessarily mean that they will stick their finger up your bum! Don't let any worry about that stop you from talking to your Doctor if you are in a higher risk category OR you have symptoms. If it has to happen, you'll cope. I did.

Biden himself said the other day he is sick of hearing about trickle down economics and is convinced it doesn’t work. Weird how nobody seems to be mentioning it though.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

Yes indeed, although I can't claim it as a typo (being honest) - I just thought of it (incorrectly, I now know) as a new govt, given the huge difference between the new and old leaderships.

I'm no Tory though mr XYZ, as you would have realised if you'd taken time to read what I wrote instead of jumping on me!

I’m not sure I agree on this. The SD are blatantly racist and homophobic. I don’t think the Tories aren’t, some of them anyway, but I think they are far more progressive than the SDs.

I’d like to see evidence of this. Johnson became leader and no-one cared about his blatant racism and homophobia as it’s entirely normalised in UK’s right wing. In fact, it’s probably more of a virtue than a vice to be “anti-woke”.

The Swedish Democrats are absolutely awful too. But at 20% of the Swedish electorate, in the UK we’re running at much more, perhaps even a slim majority with similar views.

OK. But I don’t get it.

The Swedish Democrats also talk about not tolerating racism, homophobia, misogyny or any other discrimination. But that’s cover as much as anything else. They and the Tories are still willing to push the same buttons in their respective audiences.

The issue is not so much that the SD get 20% of the vote, it's the fact that "liberal" and centre-right parties would rather work with the SD than the centre-left — the Moderate Party would rather form a government and see their leader be PM with support from SD that join a grand coalition with the Social Democrats. There is still a small hope that there might be a government led by the Social Democrats if two Liberal Party MPs can be persuaded to defect rather than endorse a SD-backed government (the same issue resulted in the Centre Party moving from the right bloc to the left bloc after the last election as they honourably refused to entertain an SD-backed government).

Similar in Italy, where centre-right parties have allied with the far right. And also the fact that Italy partially switched back to FPTP in 2018 has allowed them to get a majority (whereas in a fully proportional system, they wouldn't have).

It’s not an economic plan. Very few credible economists, nor the wider markets have bought into it.

Electorally it makes no sense either benefiting 1pc of earner. I have to conclude it’s simply a case of hands in the till before they are given the boot.

I agree the Tories are atrocious, but there is a curious thing happening on these economics threads, namely, the resurrection of economics as credible.

Just for those unaware, this is a field that missed the 2008 GFC, pedalled nonsense about debt/GDP ratios requiring austerity, and is at the forefront of downplaying risks from climate change. It is a cargo cult science devoid of physical laws and has the predictive capacity of astrology. It is rightly attacked by us scientists and even its own Nobel Prize winners described macroeconomics as "Post-Real."

You can prefix the word economist with "trusted", "credible", "leading", but it doesn't detract from the fact that economics is still a collection of theories that are untestable or falsifiable.

It was supposed to reform after the disaster in 2008, and in fairness, I have witnessed attempts to drop nonsense such as loanable funds/money multiplier but much of the stylised assumptions remain. At its core, economics is a fantastical representation divorced from reality.

On the plus side, it does provide employment for economists.

New government?

A game of musical chairs is not a general election.

You tories and your rewriting history are quite something.

Whilst it's absolutely fair to call Ullaa a sister-bothering, six-fingered, Scummer, it is shockingly abusive to label them a Tory.

You have read the section on personal abuse in the TWTD terms and conditions, right?

David McWilliams, the Irish Economist, pointed out two statistics about the British economy.

1. Take home pay for the top 10% of earners generally in Western Europe is 3 times the bottom 10% after tax and allowances. The figure for the UK is 6 times.

2. 50% of all the tax cuts in the budget go to the top 5% of earners.
