Sterling clearly pulls a German's shirt in the penalty area 20:48 - Sep 26 with 1734 viewsRadlett_blue

and on watching the replay the commentator says "I don't think there's enough in that".
Do you actually have to remove a player's shirt for it to be a foul?
Please can we have commentators who know the laws.

Officials who do would probably be handy too.

Unless you want to give a penalty at literally every corner, they were probably right.

Corners are different. At almost every one, you could probably give a penalty kick. However, most referees take the easy way out by ignoring most of the grappling but occasionally give a non-contentious free kick to the defence.
The Sterling incident was different as the two players were on their own in an open play situation & it was a blatant shirt tug. Maybe the German went down a little easily, but as Rodney Marsh says, if you don't go down, you don't get the foul.

Reminds me of the Sky co-com on Saturday who said their left back’s challenge on JD wasn’t a red because ‘he’s not that type of player.’ Oh it’s alright to stamp on someone’s achilles then is it?!

Then he said ‘If it’s a Sam Morsy or a Lee Evans, you know, someone with history, that’s a bit different…’ What?!

Ex pros try and gatekeep knowledge of the game so often - they’ll say you’re only qualified to talk about it if you’ve played at that level etc. Then some of them talk absolute rubbish.

I understand what you are saying and suppose I agree but how big a shirt pull is allowed ?

Im with you on that. Theres no where in the rules that it says its ok to grab another players shirt and impede their run by that means. I never shirt pulled in all my days of playing amateur football. The fact its done by both sides is only because everyone gets away with it.

It's a foul if it has the effect of holding up an opponent. So, like most of the laws, slightly subjective.

Like the ref I didn't think there was enough in it. Was it really a 'big' or 'blatant' shirt pull?

I don't understand the almost contact desire from fans for soft free kicks and penalties to decide games of football.

The ball isn’t in play from a corner or free kick until it’s kicked. Do what you like when the balls not in play.

I think you missed his point. He didn't say it wasn't a red because he's not that type of player. His point was, and he said exactly this, 'only the player knows if he meant it'.

I think it's fair to suggest you have a better idea if someone meant a bad tackle if they've history for it or are particularly strong in the tackle, which Morsy and Evans definitely can be.

He was talking about it in the context of what punishment the LB deserved. The implication was that he deserved less punishment because he didn't mean the tackle.

Personally I think he did mean it, but either way it's irrelevant - intention isn't a necessary component in a red or yellow card offence.

What history does Lee Evans have? Morsy fair enough, but Evans isn't a dirty player at all.

Of course it is, that's ridiculous.

Would you punish someone who mis-times their jump and heads the back of his opponent's head, in the same way as a deliberate headbutt, because it doesn't matter if he meant it?

I think you'll find that intent will always come into the mind of a referee when judging a tackle or incident.

If you’re sent off for violent conduct then of course that tends to be intentional. It’s difficult to be accidentally violent.

But when it comes to ‘serious foul play’, intent officially has nothing to do with it.
