Loads more rozzers, plus private security at Portman Road 15:13 - Oct 22 with 1927 viewsDubtractor

It's really noticeable how much more presence there is of both this season. Is that just something that comes with much bigger crowds, more as a precaution that anything else, or have there been issues that have seen this higher presence as a result?

I'm guessing the bigger crowds have meant we've had to increase stewarding proportionately. And private security will be needed to supplement regular staffing levels.

The policing has increased because members of the public have complained to Suffolk police about the trouble from the ground to the station.
Costing both sides a small fortune to cover the costs weekly now.

There was trouble after the Barnsley game and from what I saw there were not enough police around to deal with it effectively.

I think there were quite a few complaints about it so I imagine that’s what's behind it.

Police presence is dependent on the category of the game, and has nothing to do with the crowd size.

A certain number of stewards are required for the game to go ahead, and has nothing to do with higher attendances. Unfortunately, we have to approach external security companies to fill the gaps, the club lost a lot of stewards and other staff during Covid.

The private security is not just at the ground. At the last couple of games there have been a sizeable number of them on the road to the station.

What puzzled me on Friday was happened to the Derby fans. I normally stay in SBR to applaud the players which means I am a little delayed getting to the station but on Friday there was no sign of any Derby fans on my route to the station. Admittedly there would have been few of them going to catch a train but I didn't see any heading in any direction. Were they kept in the ground?

It does strike me that Portman Road is a potential flash point, so I wonder if there is another part of the stadium which would be better place to house away fans. I suppose the Magnus Stand near SBR would be one option, with a cordoned off exit to Constantine Road but maybe that would be problematic too. And it would impinge on the fan zone.

They walk through the staff car park, that wouldn't be ideal, it is marginally segregated though?

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

No, I mean they'd have to create a segregated walkway running alongside the player's entrance to the ground, which would impinge on the practice pitch.

To be honest, I am not really sure what the answer is (short of keeping away fans in the ground), but it does seem to me that things have definitely got worse this season, and the trip to the station is an unnecessarily aggressive experience, made worse by the ridiculous behaviour of our fans. Indeed, if we were to get promoted, presumably things will be much worse with much more high category games.

There was one massive Derby fan walking towards the station when I was. Some d!ckhead kid started signing "Can you hear the Derby sing?" at him and he just turned round and replied "I was singing in the ground". He was a lot bigger and more aggressive looking than the Town fan, who promptly shut up.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Yes, it does strike that a lot of the bravado comes from fans of ours who are teenagers or barely out of their teens, and that they would run a mile if real trouble broke out.

Back in the 90s the away fans always got held back for a bit if they were sort likely to cause aggro - eg Leeds, Millwall, Birmingham - maybe we'll see a return to that?

I'm staggered that they still don't, I'm always parked at the other end of Town so wouldn't know....when and why did that change?

Don’t the club only pay for any Policing deemed necessary inside the ground.?
