What’s the capacity of the Lower and Upper tiers of the North Stand?? 09:53 - Nov 4 with 2559 viewsunstableblue

That noise Saturday seemed remarkable at Charlton

Listening back on the highlights… as Charlton press for a 3rd goal, I just can’t remember hearing crowd noise like that on many highlights ever, incredible - shame it probably put the Town players heads into mode: “we’ve already won, my heads at the final whistle in front of the away end” (painful, but we move on)

That was 3,200 blues I believe, critically in one bank. And of course an away crowd, but still.

I’ve always found Sheepshank and the Club decision to not do a ‘Kop’ or a predominantly larger lower tier a huge missed opportunity.

I assume the lower tier is actually around 3000 anyway? So it’s maybe an acoustics or fan issue?

Or is the upper tier much larger? I was thinking 4500? Could you ever incentivise the lower to migrate to the upper?

Could you somehow pipe the sound from below to the upper to get more coordinated singing??

Anyone know the different capacity of each tier? It states 7500 in total.

A one tier North Stand would have been great, blue wall style. But Sheepy rushed ahead and put in a frankly rather unremarkable stand.

I reckon it's less to do with absolute numbers, single bank, acoustics and more to do with the average 6 pints each head in there had consumed prior to kick off.

Wasn't it the case that he wanted a single tier but it wasn't possible because of the road and houses behind, it would have had to have been a much deeper structure?

I once read a very long article on football ground acoustics (and yes it was very boring) but the summary concluded that in most case where a ground was expanded in stages ie 1 stand at a time over a period of years the acoustics were loss into the air. Whereas grounds that were built as a complete new stadium they retained the acoustics /atmosphere.
Apparently it was because the in stages approach meant the first new developed stand is designed purely to increase capacity without thinking about how the other stands will be integrated in the future because the 'future' could years away.
Anyway what that results in is the sound heads up and out of the ground irrelevant of how many fans are in the ground.

However the article didn't seem to factor in 3000 Town fans on a short away day giving plenty of time for a load of beers before kickoff meaning pissed up fans singing.

Something like that although I bet if the gamechanger lot had been in charge they’d have made it happen.

I can see a "new" Cobbold stand being single tier. So long as they retain the club lettering on the gantry...very iconic (at least to me).

The plans for the Cobbold were two tier, similar to the North albeit a bit higher with boxes

They drew plans up at the time

I was there Saturday with two friends and yelled our heads off. None of us had a drink, we just yelled our team on (to a miserable draw!).

However, I couldn't do that at home matches as all the people around me are silent. It doesn't help that I am in Churchman's upper, but I couldn't get three season tickets together in the North Stand. We only ever get tickets in the North for the cup games and spend the time standing and cheering like the good old days. Occasionally in Churchmans we give the away fans some vocals, but it isn't like Saturday at Charlton.

Perhaps the club should contact all of us that do away games and ask us if we would all like to sit together behind the goal in the North Stand? I suspect that many would take that option and would sing as they do away, as I know I would.

... on the club's twitter feed included jaeger bombs at 9.30ish... I think booze is a constituent factor in noise generation!

... we're a vocal group of 6, that would have got season tickets in the Lower North if free, but chose not to go in the upper as we wanted to feel connected to the lower North, so from sides stand we sing away and are able to stand for most of the match.

There are sections/groups in the middle of the lower north who don't sing, and it seems like the two ends are more vocal.

We need an advanced AI algorithm based visual and audio recognition solution (feck the new pitch) that scans fans in all stands... those in the lower north who don't have mouths opening for a certain % of the game will be moved to another stand - or to some kind of Logans Run amphitheatre for 'RENEWAL' (see mock-up video of Portman Road practice pitch below)... those in other stands will be moved into the lower North for further monitoring!

Have often thought it’s the acoustics of north stand lower that is the problem - how to resolve? Boarding the lower tier roof? Adding a lip to the roof or adjusting the sides?

Definitely worth the club investigating as it’s a real shame currently, there must be specialists that could advise on ways to resolve?

Indeed, looked identical to the North Stand. Saw a mocked-up picture in Derek Bowden's office one afternoon.

Would it have been heresy to switch the hardcore noisy lot to the other end and create a kop there?

The SBR lower tier totals 3.194 (blocks 4 & 6 are both 715 and block 5 is 1,764). So pretty much the same as the away end at Charlton. Sorry, I was a bit bored!

I salute your commitment to providing such stats

So that's 4306 in the Upper Tier, 3194 - if you switched those round, you're in a different place, in terms of noise generation potential

It's a great looking stand and a thing of beauty when full, see below. But I think there needs to be a way to link the stands singing - no idea how?
