Is there not a cricket thread today? 11:38 - Dec 1 with 1342 viewsSteve_M

England now 502/4 on Day 1.

Still five overs left. Not bad considering half the team seem to have had he sh1ts yesterday.

Ah, looks like that's it and the paying crowd have lost five overs. 506/4.

aren't they supposed to play 90 overs? So the crowd lost 15 overs...

Not sure how they were ever going to get those in though, given the light situation.

It has always been a mystery to me why cricket doesn't start a little earlier on the subcontinent.

I saw that score and wondered if it had actually started yesterday.

A full day of 90 overs would have seen as score 600 at least. Totally crazy.

Stokes, Livingstone and Jacks aren't exactly going to be poking and prodding either.

Nobody wanted to curse it.

Phil banned Gainsborough for the morning.

Mad scenes. Gotta feel for Bairstow though?

I remember a few years ago pondering on this board why our test team that were struggling to reach 100, did not just pretend it was a one day game when they batted. To be clear, I was saying that from a position of ignorance of in-depth knowledge of cricket and of humour rather than being foresighted. I wonder if test cricket will become more endangered if it becomes too similar to one-day cricket.

One day stuff is the game in danger. Tests will never die and T20 is wildly popular so it’s the 50 over game that will probably have to give.

Highest ever first session score, highest ever day 1 score. Nuts.

When this team click, they really click - with the caveat that the strip appears to have been prepared by Tarmac....

If Jimmy can get anything out of this pitch, he really is a genius.

I think that where the Indian TV market goes, the game follows.

As you allude to, the IPL is the biggest cricketing competition in the world, and the affinity for Test cricket so deep in India, that these two forms of the game will be set.

Wonder if the big brains at the ECB will try and 'Hundred-ise' the 50 over game.

(The Hundred is pointless, by the way...)

I would agree one-day (as per the cricketing definition) will go first, but I meant one-day as the literal definition (all limited overs cricket that is completed in one day). Test cricket may eventually become just a longer version of the same thing.
