There was a Co-Operative local ran cycle cafe in the building before Brewdog were gonna open. It closed because the person running it had a family loss and had to give it up to my knowledge. Without a doubt Ipswich needs development, but filling the place with more sh1tty corp chains to extract profit from the local community isn't the investment Ipswich needs.

It's James Watt's fault and usually is, I just happen to point it out.

I had been in there, and whilst it was fine it wasn't something that was going to attract many people down to it. I'd much prefer local businesses going into these places, but they do need to have bit of glitz and glamour and have the investment on the outside of the building as well to attract people in. On a separate and semi related note, I have zero idea how these huge chains operate - there are restaurants that open up, that have huge capital investment into them to establish them - that are empty 5 nights a week bar people in there on offers - and half busy on a Friday and busy on a Saturday. How with their rent and staffing costs can they be turning over profits, or do they just not do and rely on busier places doing so and they are there as loss leaders as a presence?

Chain businesses, particularly restaurants, have loads of odd things going on that make you wonder where the money is coming from. Sure I read some stuff about Pizza Express and Carlucio's having very odd investments and changing hands of company going on over the years. Then there was Byron who got stung employing illegal immigrants across multiple locations. Or chains like BHS going under the the pension funds vanishing to yachts in Monaco. I feel like the Microshops thing could have a real future in Ipswich if done correctly. Sadly we need power structures that actually care about the town/people over positions, PR opps and lining their own pockets to do so.

But even with all that dodgy stuff going on, why open a restaurant in Ipswich, which must be a £250k initial investment kitting out premises etc, or large ongoing rents, having to pay staff costs etc to spend 5 nights a week being lucky to clear £150 through the till which wouldn't even cover half the wages?

Unless something is going on behind the boards I don't think it even had a COMING SOON sign up yet? I walk past it at least once a week and don't recall a lot happening since it closed as the cycle cafe.

Yes, open lots of hipster-run businesses peddling wares such as beard wax, artisan tea and pre-rolled up jeans. That will appeal to the average Ipswich person.

Tell me you've never been in the microshops without telling me you've never been in the microshops. I'm sure some more gammon dominated watering holes for people to get unhealthy, violent and stabby outside is what A REAL MANLY Ipswich economy needs.

Those hipsters can get a bit leary mind. Especially with a bit of micro-brewery made sunflower beer inside them.

BANTZ aside though, Ipswich has enough pubs and to be honest the further away I am from them on the weekend the better for the most part. Town is a warzone as is.

Agree. I tend to avoid town drinking these days. I would rather go to a nice countryside pub and have a good meal. Maybe I am old and boring?!

I was surprised they were still going ahead with it given how long it took to get plans approved & when they published their last accounts which really suggested expansion into new areas wasn't a good idea at the moment. Oh well maybe it will become a Wetherspoons ;)

TBF, a little bit of PR and Greenwashing aside the chain bar aspects of both businesses are almost identical.

Perhaps after drinking with beardy hipsters for 5-6 days a gentleman might prefer something a tad more stabby at the weekend?

I’d absolutely love to put a business there if I had the money to do so. (plus we’re settled down in Surrey with kids schools etc.) My family had the Unicorn brewery until the 1920’s and also quite a good portfolio of pubs in Ipswich and surrounding area. They were all bought out by Tolly Cobbold eventually. Think a lot of the family lived in Foundation street, so not so far away. Reckon a pub with good food and maybe a micro brewery would work well there?

I think at some point something like that would work, something similar to the Cannon in Bury St Edmunds - but Ipswich is so disparate in places that knowing the best spot for it at the moment is a tough ask The Unicorn building still stands there, one of my friends used to live in the top floor flat which was really nice
