What exactly are the rules at this stage? Supposing in theory that all the first team squad were fit, if an over-21 is signed would someone have to be booted out of the squad?

I'm just wondering if players who are proven but still U21 aren't specially sought after at this time of year.

(Excuse my ignorance on all this. And I do realise that most squads by now do have some long-term casualties and hence actual gaps in their squads.)
