Who are you dropping of a new centre back is signed? on 12:24 - Jan 15 with 1767 views | NeedhamChris | Woolfenden is so critical to how we play I don't see how it could be anyone other than Burgess. Although I don't see how Donacien isn't at threat in that scenario either

At this level you won't find anyone better than Woolfy who fits McKenna's style of play.

It’s not just them. The goal yesterday game from an issue in midfield. Just like the Wycombe defeat. The goal at Lincoln was a right back issue. Portsmouth scored from a foul by a midfielder and - IIRC - a full back being beaten at the far post after another midfielder failed to stop the cross coming in. Peterborough’s was down to Walton losing flight of the ball. Fleetwood similar to yesterday - a shot which took a deflection. What I’m trying to say is I think it’s too simplistic to say our conceding ills are because of issues with the centre backs.

Can he (and the rest of defence) do their jobs properly IN THE BOX when we are under pressure and keep conceding late goals?

Please don't tell us that they are reliable. [Post edited 15 Jan 2023 12:41]

But it’s not all down to the centre backs. If you said we can’t be trusted at all defensively as we keep dropping too many points then I’d agree but, looking at the most recent goals conceded from Fleetwood onwards, I don’t think the centre backs themselves can be apportioned much blame. Except, intriguingly, McKenna did mention a different line to blocking shots in the post game interview yesterday - both deflected goals against Fleetwood and Plymouth came off Burgess.

Wolfenden was very good at times yesterday on 12:49 - Jan 15 with 1545 views | unstableblue | His lay off to Burns Premiership class One of his through balls just excellent Thought his defending was pretty good. Burgess and Humphreys needed to prevent the goal, end of. Still think Donacien is a weak link currently. KVY running really unsettled Plymouth. We have the players now… maybe bring in Edmundson, Lunongo/Humphreys, Hirst and Broadhead … maybe even KVY And let’s go on a RUN

We should be preventing the ball from getting anywhere near our box. Sitting back at all is a mistake in my book, especially later in the game when people are tired and maybe on a yellow. We're far better off continuing to push forward with the fresh attacking players brought on for the final 20 or 30 minutes. Losing the impetus (due to a Plymouth injury break) and not seizing it back thereafter was what enabled the situation to develop during which a lack of defensive solidity cost us.

How many goals recently have come down to centre back errors?

We defend from the front though. We try and press an win the ball back before it gets to the defence. Yesterday's goal was a failure of the team.

Who are you dropping if a new centre back is signed? on 15:19 - Jan 15 with 1274 views | Herbivore | I don't think the CBs are really the problem but if we did strengthen it'd be a partner for Woolfenden. He's consistently been one of our best performers this season and I'm not sure many, if any, of the recent frustrating goals we've conceded can be attributed to him.

I was getting fed up with people saying "we need a centre back, we need a centre back" so was pointing out one of the current pairing would have to drop out. If you read my subsequent posts in the thread, you'd see me defending (no pun intended) them.

A fair point. At the level we are at, it is going to be possible to improve on the players we have in any position. At the level we are playing, it is going to be difficult to persuade better players than we have to come in. Effectively any defender we got in would have to be someone like Cashin at Derby or McGuinness but would mean Edmondson and Keogh dropping even further away from the first team. I agree that our defensive failings are a tactical thing more than a personnel one.

Yeah Woolfy is outstanding. Can’t see us reverting to old fashioned hoof it CBs.
