WTF has happened to this Country? 12:35 - Jan 27 with 13465 viewsTalkingBlues

I can't believe how poor just about everything is in the UK, I have honestly never felt so depressed about living and working in this Country, I now truly appreciate why people are so keen to move abroad.

Every company you deal with is out to screw you over and you need to be a Consumer Contracts expert just to get what you're entitled to, as the standard line now appears to be to mis-sell and misinform customers. Service sector? My God, it's non existent and couriers, WTAF is going on there!?!?! I am struggling to continue to operate a business due to the sheer quantity of failed collections/deliveries from a variety of couriers, blue chip (lol) and other, leading to customer cancellations and refunds. They all say the same thing "can't get drivers due to Brexit" these appear to be some of the unappreciated consequences for small businesses such as mine, we have the same issue trying to find Lorry Drivers, massive shortage and a huge hike in wages as a result of the demand also crippling profits.

I've not even mentioned the strikes of just about every industry in the UK, poor pay, poor living conditions, huge wealth inequality etc etc etc. For the first time in my life, I truly feel that the UK has "had it" it's finished, we have been well and truly flushed down the sh1tter and I just don't know how we are going to get out of a mess this big, it's scary, I am genuinely mortified at what lies ahead for my kids.

How the hell have we allowed all this to happen?

"immense damage was being done to healthy populations who were being forced into some kind of mental and economic abyss"

You mean those same healthy populations that escaped dying from Covid thanks to the lockdowns?

Lockdowns weren't great, but better the temporary mental & economic trough they caused than the alternative.

That’s not what happened at all though is it! Covid wasn’t ripping through healthy younger populations in terms of deaths. I mean the data is all there for you. The same people though, might have been at greater risk for other things could not have that seen to.

Instead of protecting those that really needed protecting (look at nursing homes in the UK/NY for example) many governments done nothing and then it was too late. So implemented a bunch of this stuff after the horse has bolted and kept it that way for far too long based a some rather unscientific factors.

For what it is worth I was in favor of some restrictions pre vaccine but much of what was put in place made absolutely no sense. Protecting the vulnerable was key in the early stages. For folks not being able to make individual choice based on risk factors to themselves and those around over a year into it, it was all becoming ridiculous. That NHS ad I saw of some people having a picnic in the park and a guy “Too Many” because there was more than 4 people outside. This was like April 2021. I mean come on!

Sadly our govt. being as incompetent as it was got a lot wrong, locked down too late early doors (there are studies clearly showing this for March 2020) and then again later on, but nevertheless did still save thousands of lives by shutting down when it did.

It's tragic that some people with other serious illnesses suffered as a result, but I don't think any Govt. had a choice than locking down for the benefit of the larger numbers at risk - "the greatest good" principle".

As for younger people - I don't think you can have seen the numbers, incl. for those suffering from Long Covid, many of whom still haven't been able to get back to their previous normal lives.

But it wasn’t really working as it was supposed to!

Also in regards to your last statement. I am under 40 and literally everyone I know has had Covid 2/3 times (not sure of anyone who hasn’t had it at this point) and I don’t anyone suffering serious effects whether they had no vaccine, two dowses or bostered to the max. So if you’re basing extended lock downs of that as well then I can’t agree. Especially as the virus became less dangerous.

Basically it was mishandled early doors then went on far too long based on models which turned out to be false and politics. I mean they were one step away from doing it again in Christmas 2021 in the Uk.

No issue with the alternative view but there is a lot of hindsight here. The NHS was overrun and people were waiting in corridors for oxygen. Not sure what choice there was really. This seems to be more that you fancied your chances of getting a minor dose so lets just carry on. I get it. For some people, lockdown was a real challenge and I don't blame people for being frustrated. I think just letting it play out would have been a disaster though to be honest.

By the way, I have not had covid. I am mid thirties with couple of co-morbidities. Had three doses of vaccine and take a decent dose of zinc/vitamin D* each day. Yet to have it (to my knowledge).

*Not making any claims about the effectiveness of this. It could well be having zero impact.

Truly impaired.

I'll try to remember to post you some links re young ppl & Long Covid, but not now. Basically your own experiences as you relate are just anecdotal.

Yes it was v. badly mishandled, but would have been worse without lockdowns.

Terrible mistake by Johnson & co. to lift requirement to mask, esp. in NHS buildings, quite apart from anything else. Mitigations such as ventilation could & should also have been made mandatory in medical & educational establishments, workplaces etc.

Having a clueless sh ytehawk who was making decisions based on how it would affect his popularity was always going to cause problems.

The lockdown was VERY necessary, though dimwitted righties were unable to grasp why. Having had their silly heads filled with brexit lies, they were open to even more fanciful stuff.

The intent of the lockdown was to slow the pace of spread so as to allow the hosputals to cope. Much as when motorways flashe up 40mph signs. It is not intended to reduce the amount of traffic, but to slow the amount reaching the 'pinch point'. However that does not fit in with the nonsense being peddled by righties

'the elite were trying ro kill off the population, the Chinese were using it as a means to take over the world, it was an excuse to inject a tiny microchip ...................... ' those being some of the less mad thoughts being peddled on rightie websites

It's not clear to me that the models were wrong.

The UCL model that prompted the US lockdown predicted up to 2.2 million COVID-19 deaths in the United States under its most extreme scenario.

To date, according to Worldometer, there have been over 1.1 million Covid deaths in the US, so the estimate of 2.2 million deaths with no preventative measures seems eminently believable, if not actually an underestimate.

Have an uppie for mentioning ventilation

It is profoundly significant the the Houses of Parliament have had very effective and expensive ventilation systems fitted as a matter of priority

Whereas schools and hospitals have not been given ventilation systems

There’s little doubt this country is in a complete mess at the moment. Our Government have taken their eye off the ball and due to their extremely poor leadership and incompetence have allowed things to slip. Look at events recently with tax evasion by certain Tory members, all in it together?! Couldn’t be further from the truth. I feel rather embarrassed and ashamed seeing us struggle like we are a third world country.
