Totally agree. It's embarrassing at a football match.

My 6 year old son was begging for my phone when that started. I stayed strong and refused his protests!

Fine at an Ed Sheeran concert, not at a football match

What negative impact does it have though?

It makes no real impact upon other fans' enjoyment of the match, nor does it impact upon the players.

If it generates enjoyment for the young people who choose to do it, why not just let them enjoy themselves whilst harming precisely nobody else?

The negative impact is that it’s annoying.

Also unnecessary light pollution and environmental impact of running down battery power.

That's reaching more than a little bit there...

Light pollution that doesn't even impact the sky, and discharging perhaps 0.5% of one's battery in order to power a small LED.

Just let people enjoy things that bring them pleasure, and have a negative impact upon precisely nobody.

I was watching a stream (working) and saw someone holding their phone up filming, roughly on the halfway line. What the hell were they hoping to see? Surely they did not record the whole game like that? I can never understand it.

Truly impaired.

Seriously? The floodlights at the game would have been kicking out about 1.25 million lumens of light and you ar concerned about the light pollution impact of a few mobile phones?

There has to be a woosh coming.

It would be nice if everyone else in the world never did anything that we found annoying. Unfortunately it's not very likely that this will happen.

When did people stop going to football to watch the football?

Now its all about flags, banners and waving phones in the air.

Up until the 80a lots of fans used to bring those wooden rattles to games. So people waving flags and phones really isn't that strange.
