MK away + ice hockey 17:47 - Feb 5 with 1549 viewsBLUEBEAT

I see their ice hockey team are at home the same evening we play in the afternoon.

Never been to ice hockey before. Is it worth checking out? Plenty of tickets available.

It’s a good sport but only if you go to a top level game in this country, even then compared to the big countries in Eastern Europe and the North Americans it’s akin to watching league 1 vs watching city vs Utd.

The level that MK ice hockey are at is probably like watching league 2

I've been down to Altrincham Ice rink for Manchester a few times pre-pandemic. It's great fun but quite hokey and non-league meets American cliches in terms of presentation.

If you've never been definitely go. Just to see for yourself.

Yes, we’ll worth it if you’re there anyway. I’d def go if I could. I used to watch the local college team in Maine and it was always a good night out.

Go Black Bears! lol

I didn’t really know what was going on, but it didn’t matter much. All my knowledge came from playing EA Sports hockey on PS1 in about 1997. It has a real cult following in the UK. People I know who follow Cardiff are absolutely nuts - they buy into the experience more than we do as footie fans from what I’ve seen.

One thing I was going to suggest is don't book too near the back on the main seating area (blocks 4-8) as there are pillars that obstruct the view quite badly. I don't know where exactly as I've only ever sat in the away block and always made sure to book early and at the front.

If you get there while they're warming up, I always enjoy standing by the glass and watching up close. Stand behind the goal and see if you can stop yourself flinching when the puck hits the plexi/glass (I can't remember what MK have in their rink) at 80+ mph a few inches from your face. Makes you appreciate the skill of the goalies, even if they are in tonnes of padding.

As for quality, I've not seen anything of them since they dropped out the Elite League (top division), but they've got several players who have played at that level. What is that level? We'll I'd suggest the top league in the UK is League 2 level compared to the rest of the world and based on the names I recognise, MK Lightning probably play at Conference level at best. However they seem to get decent crowds at MK and are in a tight 3-way battle for the title so they'll be fighting to keep up the pressure.

Oh and for fun trivia, their forward Liam Stewart is actually one of Rod Stewart's kids!

I recommend you get there early enough to watch the warm-up

Probably the most fun part of the experience

Apart from the ice-repair truck

If you're staying yes, if not I'd wouldn't delay your journey for it

Less than a 10 min walk from the rink to the hub if you want bars/food afterwards

Daft question - is ice hockey suitable for a 4 and 7 year old? Someone told me that the violence can be quite full on - proper full blooded punches etc.

I'd say yes, but it is a bit of a paradoxical situation.

It is a very physical sport with hard contact between players and fights do still happen, but most games won't have a full on fight, but 5+ years ago it would have been averaging at least one a game. There can also plenty of pushing and shoving after stoppages which is just accepted. It is not everyone's cup of tea, but other than a goal, nothing gets a crowd going like 2 guys dropping the gloves.

Too contrast with the very physical and possibly violent game on the ice, off-ice is as family friendly as it can possibly be. There is still home and away sections, but no police or stewards or cordoning off fans. You can go to game away in your biggest rivals rink and sit in the home end in an away jersey and you'll be teased rather than ejected. No drama at all. Additionally all the chants are family friendly too. If you swear around kids you'll tend to get a tap on the shoulder and told to watch your language.

We've taken plenty of friend's and family with kids from 1-10 and they've all enjoyed it and the parents have always been keen to bring family again.
