The idea of someone being told that they are going to spend the next 30 years of their life in prison, and how that must feel to the individual, is insane and impossible to imagine. It's such a long time. Even worse if you're a former police officer. You really have to f**k up to end up in that situation.

(I'm not for one moment suggesting it's not deserved).

I understand what you are saying and don’t disagree.

However, prison is voluntary. He chose to do what he did. What is not voluntary is the unimaginable pain and suffering of his victims and their families.

I could never vote for capital punishment, but he should be locked away until he dies with no chance of release. He should be made to pay for his prison time too. Every last penny.

36 life sentences. If he's out in 30 years then something is very wrong with the system. Even if he behaves like a saint for 30 years there should be no chance he gets out surely?

Truly impaired.

Agreed, he should never be released. I like the US system where they run sentences one after the other (sequentially?). I make that 1080 years. Time off for good behaviour would reduce it to say 540. That’d do.

Just want to stress again that I really wasn't disagreeing for one moment with the outcome.

Clearly the safest place for him to be is behind bars.

Safe for others, maybe not too safe for him as ex-police and a rapist! I imagine the showers will be busy.

'Consecutively' (as opposed to 'concurrently') is also an option in the UK, was certainly quite well used back in the day when I was a probation officer.

I didn’t know that. I thought sentences always ran alongside each other here. Interesting.

There are good and bad people in every part of life, imagine how those poor parents of the babies (alledgly) killed by the nurse that was supposedly caring for their loved one feel

I’m not disagreeing with you in the slightest.

The US penal system is really barbaric which uses slave labour to compete with Mexico etc. Their rate of reoffending is sky high. The much more liberal and softy-softy styles of the Nordic countries have much less reoffending.

Just to add on again, what he did was disgusting, I’m not disagreeing with the sentence at all.

That stuff is an urban myth beloved of the Mail and especially the Sun where their view of sex is that of a 12 year old school boy.

As a former copper he will automaticaly put on rule 43 = segregation fot his sort, sex offenders, violent killers etc

Whilst he is certainly bad there is the certainty that he is also mad. Some physocolgical disorder that caused him to behave in such a manner, repeatedly.

For that alone society needs protecting from him. If he is ever released it will be when he is too frail to act on any 'desires' he might still have.. It is a case of societies needs are far greater than the individual.

I’m sure some people are mentally ill. Others just enjoy controlling, hurting and killing. Plenty of people are like that.

As long as he’s locked away permanently, preferably at his expense with no luxuries like TVs, computers and radios I couldn’t care a less. He should never be released under any circumstances.

Energy, support and thought should be with his victims and their families. Not that creature.

Again that strays into the Daily Mails simple answers for simple folk thinking.

Someone behaving as he did is not the behaviour of a 'normal' person. He is mentally unwell, which, however, does not absolve him of any blame or responsibilty.

Guff about luxuries may excite those who feel it was them attacked and 'misused' by this bloke but it ignores the realities of prison life.

Access t a radio, tv, computer are privilges which allow prison staff a means of control.... carrot v Daily Mail stick. That the latter does not work and merely causes huge disruption for the prison staff

Put bluntly 'be a good boy for six months and we will allow you a radio, play up at anytime and it will be removed'. That privilege ciots prison staff nothing, but spread across the wing, the prison makes their job easier and cheaper.

That is why so much of what the Mail and Sun bleat is ignored. It might cause righties to salivate but it ignores reality.

It's not about how he behaves, rather whether the parole board thinks he poses a danger to others. That'll be a pretty big hurdle to get over.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

The reality is that there are many men that enjoy the control, hurting and killing. Too many. It is naive in my view to not recognise that is how it is.

Most do not go close to what that animal did, but how can I put it, 32,000 people were working for Hitler’s Gestapo in 1944 and many more than that did appalling things in both the regular army and in particular his private army the SS. That is how it was. There were plenty of volunteers. Not all were indoctrinated and not all were obeying orders or brutalised into doing what they did. They enjoyed it. Power and control is something in man that’s been there since humans could walk.

You must have met blokes who enjoy doing that sort of thing? Men who think it’s ok to molest and harass women in the workplace. Bullies at school. They do it because they can, it makes them feel good, big, powerful. They tend to hide their crimes which suggests to me they know their behaviour is wrong.

It has nothing to do with the Daily Mail, ‘righties’ or anything else and given my posts on this forum it’s something you cannot accuse me of. Cost? The prisoners can pay as it’s voluntary. Prison staff? Cruelly underpaid and not supported anywhere near enough. In my world they would be.

My thoughts will always be with the victims. Some will never get over this. What price them and their families? If what happened to them can be 100% reversed I will review my stance but until then, I’m not remotely interested creatures like that so called man.
