What did you make of Burns today? 19:20 - Feb 18 with 3055 viewstextbackup

Not to bring a downer on a decent afternoon, but there’s something seemingly amiss with him.

I do think Jackson has a really good shout to start a game sooner rather than later on that right side

We’ll be good again... one day

He had a helluva season last season. Got included in the Welsh world squad and didn’t have a summer break. He’s very much a marked man this season often with 2-3 players on hi,. This to get her with what looks like a a very jaded player now, I think he could do with a rest. But we seem to prefer to funnel all our attacks through him predominantly. I think we Need to play Edwards more on the other wing to get some balance in our attack, and I’d personally play Donacian at Rb and play Clarke in front of him ( instead of Burns) for a few games.

He’s just not quite at it this season. Maybe it’s the flat back four and the form of JD also which hasn’t helped. Maybe it’s that other teams are more aware of his threat. Maybe it’s because we are much better down the left than last year. I don’t know. He’s just not hit those heights.

Some of the comments on here about him on here though are really disingenuous. I think somebody referred to him as whack a ball on another thread.

Thankfully though he has won us 5 huge points against Derby, Peterborough and Plymouth .

Not the same player by a mile this season. First half today he was given a huge amount of room by FGR but failed to control the ball at least three times alone in the first half. Doesnt get his body position right...too square to where he is receiving the ball. He needs to be already on the half turn so he is always on his toes to move forward. Seems to lack a little belief in his ability to get past a player...and rallies on the ball. Then eight times out of ten his cross is failing to produce.
Just like Austin Powers he's for the moment lost his mojo.
I hope he gets it back soon.

I thought Jackson looked much better in the time he spent on the pitch. Burns hasn’t impressed me for a while and would benefit from being dropped for a couple of games at least.

We played a flat back under Cook. We never played a flat back four today and haven’t for much of the season. And how would the form of Donacien not help!?

For me he's still doing the same things as lat season. Only difference is last season those shots went in. This season they aren't.

Thought he was decent enough today. Beat his man and got the ball into the box on numerous occasions. Today was certainly a better performance as thought he was poor Tuesday

Well I've not really shared my thoughts on him but.

Positives. He knows how to play his role. He's determined, direct and clearly gives his all. He can certainly hit a ball. He also has a great partnership with Chaplin and no doubts he will also build one with Clarke. Defensively he's also OK as he likes to get back.

Negatives. He has no composure. He hits every shot with his laces. It looks amazing when it goes in. But it's a % game with his shots. There's no thought process other than smack it hard and see what happens. He did the dame again today.
His crossing... 1 out of 50 it seems finds a Chaplin. The other 49 either again is drilled without thought low and just in the direction of the box. Today countless times he had the opportunity to put balls in but he failed continously.

People think I don't like Burns because I've been quite vocal. But I did rate Burns. I commented last season that KM had clearly worked his magic as altho Burns had a fantastic season, he still hadn't looked up before crossing.. this did change and we saw the benefits of it.. it's like that teaching has gone out of the window.

I'm not going to say to much about positive performances today as the opponents were so poor, so it's hard to judge. But you can certainly tell who was poor and that was Burns.

a niche perspective

I did chuckle when he fell over a couple of times and miss-controlled a soft pass to him. He was ok today. Far from his worst outing.

Burns is 28, last season was the out of the ordinary and this year is back to his standard. There is a reason he has never played above this league. He is a decent right sided winger in this division but lacks the intelligence and quality to go any further. Maybe an unpopular opinion.

Can't blame some fans for getting overly excited about him last season as we had been served up years of dross and he was a shining light. But I think if we go up thats a position we will look to strengthen for sure

Again, personal view. Think he's been quite poor of late. Today was better but still found himself not getting his head up, hammering it around and generally being wasteful. That said, he beat his man a good few times. Jackson looked more fruitful in terms of end product.

Think he needs a rest.

I’m not sure I saw Burns pick out a town player with a ball he put in the box, majority hitting the first man, or not even getting that far.

Likely that a few did go beyond the first man, but from memory not many.

Hasn’t built the same understanding with Clarke that he has with Donacien as yet, but thought he did ok today to be fair.

We play a different defensive system than last system when Burns was thriving.

Plus one of the reasons why Burns was so good last season was the relationship he had with JD, so this will have an impact too.

I’m not saying these are the reasons why. Just throwing some thoughts out there. I said he wasn’t firing.

What surprises me the most is that he never gets benched. Other than Morsy every single player has spent time on the bench apart from Burns. Jackson's cameo today and Burns habit of choosing the wrong option all season means Jackson must start v MK.

Like a poster has said before, we now know why Burns had the CV he did have before last season.

A huge one season wonder I have no doubt.

Got on the ball more in the last 3rd and actually took on the last defender 1v1 which has stopped doing recently but his crossing is still poor. Never in the right area

He was a 7/10 for me, offered plenty going forwards beat his man to put in a cross several time and had a clear shot at goal. However agree with many comments. His crossing is quite infuriating it’s not consistent and could be better thought through with composure. He has had more defenders keeping an eye this season, he needs to get on Clarke’s wave length quickly because HC is a step ahead finding WB with early balls, he was on hi s heels more than once and wasn’t able to capitalise on being put away down that side.

He’s 6/10 for the season but that’s a comparison to last, he still has goals and assists to his name this season but they could be higher in this team.
