A question about Northern Soul 14:23 - Feb 22 with 2361 views | Illinoisblue | What are those trousers called? The big baggy ones worn by men while dancing. They’re not flares in the traditional sense. Been down a northern Soul YouTube rabbit hole and can’t stop. Fascinating.

A question about Northern Soul on 15:01 - Feb 22 with 2239 views | HARRY10 | err, they were what was worn then Those with side pockets were known as Birmingham bags, others were Oxford Bags They usually had 3 buttons t the waist - that what was was worn, not what students refer to as a seventies night, which usually feature 60's hippie stuff mixed with clothes from the US film car wash. My older sister saw her daughter gong out to one of these nights and did point out that no one, absolutely no one, dressed like that. Rather as if you had a 50's night and people were wearing zoot suits with beatle wigs, and , 'spiv' shoulder pads Watch any football match from those days and see what the crownd (teens ) are wearing.

No, these are different, flared at the top not just the bottom.

A question about Northern Soul on 17:01 - Feb 22 with 1954 views | Bluespeed225 | ‘Spensers’ were another brand. The trousers are remade today and have seen something of a comeback at do’s in recent years, on male and females! Look at pictures from back in the day and you’ll see a shift to narrow trousers, as in everyday society, during late 70’s/early 80’s, even the ones ‘soul boy trousers’ with the white piping down the side. Seeing a youngster back dropping in a pair wide legs and spinning is a sight to behold. Be careful down that hole, I dropped in during 82’, haven’t got out yet!

I wore Oxford Bags in the early 1970's they were grey with a thin pink stripe. I loved wearing them and had a green and brown pair of platform soles that I wore with them. Which probably looked a tad silly as I am 6ft 2" tall. Oxford Bags originated from the University of Oxford from the 1920's to 1950's. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

A question about Northern Soul on 18:39 - Feb 22 with 1753 views | HARRY10 | Skinners, they were the jeans. Same parallel style only with a couple of inch turn up on the leg and a bit of a gap between boot and turn up. Perhaps students will wear them with a a drape coat, Ben Sherman shirt and cravat as aptt of an 80s night
A question about Northern Soul on 18:41 - Feb 22 with 1754 views | bluefunk | They were called Oxford bags down south and they were flared from the waist, but depending on where you lived, they had different names because of where you bought them, as there were a limited number of places to buy the stuff you wanted to wear. I would buy them from adverts in New Musical Express or Melody Maker, but I can’t remember other than I do remember you could get jeans that were cut like that from Liverpool, and they were called Skinners, but you wouldn’t wear them to a Northern Soul club because they wouldn’t let you in in denim! They trend was for high waisted bags, which had loads of buttons on a wide waistband- side pockets came along mid 70s

I was interviewed by Stuart Cosgrove in the early 80s to get a place at the uni where he was a lecturer. We chatted about music, and a bit about ITFC. I didn't know anything about him or who he was but it amazed me at the time his depth of knowledge on everything we spoke about. He must have left before I started as I didn't see him until a few years later, on the tv talking about music and football.
