Broadhead 08:38 - Mar 8 with 1431 viewssuffolkpoker

Looking like a great bit of business, especially in the Janaury window.

5 games
4 goals
4 assists

How much did we pay? I recall it being around £1m.

I think it was more like 1.5m.

However there is a clear pattern emerging here I think - we should be scouting and looking to spend between 1m and 2m on PL academy players who aren't looking like making it in the PL at the moment.

Davis, Broadhead and Clarke all fall in this category and all look superb with high ceilings.

Sometimes works - but don’t forget Lee Martin -

Does indeed seem like an excellent signing and most importantly has had an immediate impact improving the team.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

That's a bit too up beat for you.

Have you been hacked?

(Only kidding, it's good to see)

I think he is/will be the key signing this season. He adds a completely different dimension to the team, especially now fully fit, he's finding/creating space that gives the midfield an outlet to pass the ball forward.
It's also helping Chaplin, in that the opposition are drawn to Broadhead which gives Chaplin more space. The same was happening with Harness at the start of the season but post his injury he isn't operating at the same level, although a goal for him would do him the power of good.

Also a callout for Jackson last night who I thought was our best player. Given how much stick he gets from some fans, kudos to him to retaining his confidence and doing what he has to do.

Surely that's on the manager and their backroom staff and their ability to spot a player.

More than happy for McKenna to go raid academies if we get promoted given his track record thus far.

He's generally been good this year when he's played.

I stand by my view that he doesn't have the skill set to play upfront by himself and he's too one dimensional in a 2 also, but that wing back, wide role he's settled in well and developed nicely and is a really good squad option at this level.

Fair play to him, he's proved me wrong.

And rather than the lazy assumptions we’d get a few loans from Man U, this is what McK brings, as he will have an extensive knowledge of players who are from that age group.

That then ties in with Ashton’s model of buying players with a large ceiling and there for potential transfer value.

Big upgrade on Harness. Has also allowed Chaplin to get closer to the goal.

You can bring in an individually good player who doesn't fit into a team. Broadhead is both individually good and good for the team. Brilliant signing so far.

Three approaches in this division for the top three.

Sheff Wed: Ugly determined football using power players - get promoted but struggle with aged players next season
Argyle: rely heavily on loan players - get promoted but struggle with small squad and low financial input
Ipswich - build a competitive championship level squad - get promoted and challenge for playoffs in first season.

3 does not go into 2 unless one of the above makes it through the play offs.
With 30 plus points left to play for anything can happen.

I think what's also encouraging is his numbers at both Sunderland and Wigan were also very good. Think he scored 10 in Sunderland's last 13 games last season and was a big part of their promotion success. 5 in 11 for Wigan before we bought him, and that was for a struggling Championship side. Started really well for us, seems very tidy on the ball, has so much quality and knows where the goal is. I like the look of him and Chappers behind Freddie, that's a really strong front 3 and with Morsy and Luongo in the middle it's got a bit of everything.

It's a bit of the reverse of how PL teams work with young players.

Buy loads of them on the cheap and if even one of them pays off it pays for the rest of them and then some.

Whereas we buy players who are good for our division that would have very good resale value if / when we have to sell them, which would probably pay for four more of the same calibre.

Some of them won't pay off, such as Harper, but you could easily see Clarke or Broadhead going to 5mil+ after a decent season in the league above, or even down here. Scott Twine was around that if I'm not mistaken.

Top players just slip into a team, seamlessly... Same can be said for Luongo and Clarke...
But Broadhead is the missing piece, imo..No surprise we are scoring 3s and 4s, with someone with his ability spicing up our forward play... Movement, touch, pace, eye for a goal and a little bit of X factor about him..
If we are resigned to the play offs, I'm feeling a lot more confident about that, with our January signings on board..
