Barcelona - Great City! 12:49 - Mar 8 with 1435 viewsblueasfook

Really enjoyed my visit to Barcelona. Lovely city with great sights to see, great food, great people. Would highly recommend if you're looking for a city break somewhere.

BUT... the real highlight of the weekend was getting a ticket for the Barcelona vs Valencia game on sunday. Amazing stadium and atmosphere. They like their drums!

I've had the good fortune to see games both at Barca and at Real Madrid. For atmosphere, it was Barca by a long way.

Yeah not really falling over myself to visit Madrid.

Cant see how it would be better than Barcelona.

There's a lot of good stuff in Madrid, but it lacks the vibe of Barcelona.

As a Spanish Resident I prefer Barcelona to Madrid But the 2 smaller cities of Valencia and Seville are my favourites here.
If you haven't been they're are both great cities to visit

I have been to Seville. Lovely Andulusian city but very hot when I went one August. It was still hot at like 4am in the morning!

I lived in Southern Spain for a couple of years in the 1990s. So i speak decent Spanish. Catalunian Spanish is a bit different but I got on with it OK. Could make myself understood if I dropped the Andaluz accent a bit!

Yes Seville in July/August is to be avoided!

I Live in Andalucia, they speak in such a lazy way, Catalunian is quite different. When i lived in Mallorca trying to understand Mallorquin another Catalunian dialect was almost impossible!

I once did Madrid Vs Ajax on Tuesday night then Barca Vs Benfica 24 hours later. Both in the Champions League.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

It is a nice place. They’ve got a cracking aquarium.

Many years ago we walked a long way on that promenade, into the locals area, found a place that only did chicken and chips. 100's of chickens on rotiseries, with chips, formica topped tables in rows, sit where you could, and beer in old school Brit grenade pint mugs. It was spectacular.

Granada, Ronda, Cordoba, Jerez and Malaga if you're in Andalusia that is.

I would look at the Costa Brava, places like Tamariu or Begur. Close to Girona (fantastic city) and Figueres for the Dali museum. Barcelona is just over an hour away for a day trip.

PS - Catalan is a language not a dialect.

I’m going to Nerja in a couple of weeks time for 10 days. Really looking forward to it. Haven’t been to that part of Spain before. Hoping to take in a few mountain hikes, some sightseeing, & hopefully a few rays of warm sunshine!

Last October we did 4 nights Malaga (fab city with beaches, culture, posh shops, great food), train to Cordoba for 2 nights ( the Mesquita was the most amazing place), train to Seville for 4 nights (perfect for food, culture, vibe). Spanish train system is tremendous compared to ours..

I live near Competa and about 15mins drive from Nerja, lots of great hikes around here. Granada is only about 75 mins away if you want proper mountains, the ski resort is open
Its going to be around 24C this weekend

Sorry badly written! Mallorquin is a dialect of Catalan

Can you keep the 24C for the last week in March please! I’ve heard it’s been a very cold winter?Competa is up in the hills isn’t it? Would you recommend a trip to Granada by rental car or tour trip?

Would also recommend Malaga. The old city has some nice historic places, good night life, restaurants and a good base from which to explore a bit of Andalusia.

I'll try! it's likely to be around 20C we probably wont get any more cold spells now. we've had a few nights hitting zero and some snow on higher ground 4,000ft + but during the day i've only needed to wear a jumper outside, not worn my coat so its not been very cold.
Yes Competa is about 30 mins from the coast, it's not far from the coast but just lots of slow windy roads, its a very nice quaint village but nothing specific to see. Frigiliana which is very close to Nerja and is similar, so if you have no car it's probably better to go there.
Granada is a nice city, But i prefer Malaga or Seville as actual cities, unless of course you want to visit the Alhambra which is great, or if want hike in mountains 6,000ft plus
