TWTD Hive Mind: Suffolk Villages to Live 04:02 - May 4 with 6953 viewsHong_Kong_Bluey

Ladies and Gents,

I am planning my return to the beautiful county of Suffolk after more than 30 years in the east. But things have changed too much in this time for me to have any real perspective on places to live.

So who better to ask, than the lads and lasses of TWTD spread over the county who can help guide me with some ideas.

Here's what I'm looking for:

Location: Suffolk. I really do not have a preference where in this fine land it should be. But I would like to remain in the county.
Village life, with at least one local pub.
Community feel, friendly people (goes without saying everyone is friendly I'm sure)

That's about it really. During my summer visit I will look around the area and try to zero in on a few options. So hopefully with the guidance of local knowledge on this forum, I can start to put a plan together.

Thank you all.

My dads village Waldringfield is ok. Near Martlesham and Woodbridge, it has a local pub, village hall and a school, but you do need a car as public transport is one bus a day - whoopee.

Waldringfield is about to be annihilated by that new housing estate behind BT, getting out of the roundabout will be fun....

Yeah, there is that. 4000 houses, no infrastructure or anything else. Scratch Walders.

Felixstowe, while not a village, is going under the radar, but massive housebuilding program currently taking place on outskirts, and also in the Trimleys. I was reluctant, but wife kept pushing, and now I'm here it alright. Got all the bits you need, pubs, and loads of cafes. Snooker club is good, missus got into carpet bowls ( a long running family trait), I'm doing table tennis, bit of golf, and travel back to footy is ok, just have to be organised. Mix of industrial one end, and very expensive housing at the other. People from all over because of the docks, bit too many from essex, but hey ho. And the great thing, parking in Town center is free and a doddle!

Felixstowe is no longer under the radar. According to The Guardian's "Reader's favourite seasise towns" article published today it is "prosperous without being pretentious".

My parents live in Peasenhall on the A1120 tourist route which cuts across from the A14 at Stowupland to the A12 at Yoxford. I love it there. Only half hour from East Ipswich, 50mins from Norwich, approx. 20mins from Aldeburgh, Walberswick, Dunwich and Southwold.

There is no pub in Peasenhall which is the only down side to that particular village. The Sibton White Horse is walkable but the bloke is a c!nt and they don't like you drinking without eating food.

But the area is great and anything west of the A12 is considerably cheaper than the coast side (towns like Leiston aside).

I could live in Sax, for sure. Train into Woodbridge/Ipswich and connections etc.

Not sure of the pubs there tbh.

I am exactly the opposite. I could never live in a city again because I feel disconnected from nature.

Holbrook 6 miles from Ipswich is a lovely village . It has a good community pub the Swan Holbrook is set in some stunning countryside and, borders the beautiful Alton reservoir, it has the River Stour on its doorstep where I spent many a long day when I was young. It has some stunning walks and is ideal if you own a dog. It has a big co-op supermarket . The house prices are very reasonable, and you will have Griff Rhys Jones as your neighbor who lives on the Holbrook/Stutton border and does a lot for the local community.

Damn those articles! More for your money than further up the A12. Several of our neighbours are 'old school' Essex, meaning their alright, not Danny dyer/green St wannabee types, just plain old 'Bobby Moore might have stole that bracelet' sorts. Anyway, they'd all looked further along the coast or Woodbridge, and found they liked little old Stowe'. Our net door neighbour is Scottish, used to be Michael Caines' wine supplier! Great stories of long lunches in the 60's.

I thought you lived in Essex / London?

Melton is technically a village but is more of a suburb of Woodbridge and is my dad's home patch. It's nice though. I know/knew it well but have not been their since 2008 when my nan died.

Just wanted to thank you for all of your comments.

Plenty of good information and advice for me to mull over. It's going to be a busy summer getting around all those places in 3 weeks!

Why is Woodbridge so hot?

Cause it's close to Melton!

I couldn't persuade my wife but if I could live anywhere (and afford it), I would live in one of the magnificent houses overlooking the sea in Cliff Road, Felixstowe, preferably one of the 1930s modernist houses.

The area has a particular fondness for me because my parents lived in the vicinity for the longest period in their life.
