Greed the modern footballer 12:31 - Jun 4 with 3021 viewscressi

The top players who have earned absolute millions the latest Benzema of to get more money Not like he hasn't earned enough in the last nine years at Madrid. Messi on how difficult to go back to a club he claims he loves in Barcelona who also gave him a fantastic life style he could play for free for two years. They would all play for blood money no morals , it's a sad place players going to China in the past with their record on human rights money rules the world. No Johan Cruyff's around who refused to go to Argentina in 78 because of the military dictatorship.

I really don't get the argument that footballers are greedy when their career is coming to an end. Why should they play for free when hardly anybody else in any walk of life would pass up a last payday?

Think it's often strange how often footballers get singled out from other rich people.
Personally don't think anyone should be rich, but if we're going to have this world based around some people being obscenely wealthy and others having virtually nothing, footballers are no less deserving that any other amongst the former.

I understand that Messi has told Barca he will play for free but La Liga won't allow that so he then offered to play for whatever Barca can afford and fits within La Liga rules but so far they have not offered him a contract.

Benzema spent a large part of his career a supporting act to Ronlado, he is selfless as player. I think he's earned the right to go and earn that money for a couple of years. I would if I were him

Probably an entourage of agents and hangers on that push for these final pay days.

I'm not suggesting footballers should play for free but can we at least acknowledge the whole 'short career' thing is completely irrelevant these days for the top players?

We need to stop comparing players on £150k a week to Bob from accounts on £30k a year.

Truly impaired.

Exactly J2Blue I'm not on about championship players or lower who may wish to make a killing before retirement. I'm on about players been paid north of a hundred grand a week for a substantial amount of years Not like the boys of 78 or 82 who ended up having to work after their football career came to a end. Once there was a connection between a fan and top players those days are over sadly.

I would add the word "obscenely" before rich in your second sentence, personally.

Don't forget, the majority of us, in the context of the world, are amongst the richest people. It is just a matter of where you take your point of reference and how you measure riches.

Johan Cruyff played in Spain when Franco was still on power - he didn’t go to Argentina, not due to objections regarding its dictatorship but out of concern for his family. Think they were targets in a kidnapping plot just before that World Cup.

Indeed - how dare working class people get rich!! At least they work for it, and they bring money into the country - the PL is an incredibly successful export.

My only criticism is the likes of Neville (and I don’t know how widespread this is) but setting themselves up as a Company to save tax rather than PAYE.

I don't see what's wrong with that, loads of freelancers in my industry set themselves up as companies and we earn a fraction of what Neville etc. earn. If you're offering some kind of service in what way are you not a company?

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Indeed, when it's an older player you can't really grate them. Benzema has completed football.

I have problems with the players like Oscar, who at a young age traded in Chelsea for China, ruining his Brazil career in the progress. It's not like Chelsea would have been paying peanuts.

Rather divergent from the topic at hand but did you take that image of the Orion Nebula (M42)?

Since I'm here, on the topic, someone wants to be paid for working shocker.
