Not much of an English team....owners, coaching staff, the significant majority of players. Perhaps we can count them as English because of the supporters? Bit different to a few decades ago....ITV repeating the documentaries of when English clubs....proper English clubs....ruled European football. A bygone age now.

Yeah, a brilliant age when racists, xenophobes and bigots could go unchallenged, crazy days!

It's all a bit hollow isn't it? Great achievement but also, kind of, expected? Their squad is ridiculous. I'm probably being harsh but it doesn't really feel like they have overachieved as much as just hit par when you look at their squad. Although Guardiola is clearly a great coach, his dramatics and petulance make him impossible to listen to. I will be avoiding all coverage of their win. The utter rubbish he comes out with that everyone then pretends is some sort of profound wisdom really is tedious.

I am certainly not questioning that a lot of aspects of following football are much better now, safety and facilities in the stadium not least. And we have certainly benefited over the years from the enjoyment of watching players from other countries, not forgetting of course the current significant and much welcomed investment from the USA. But there's something not right with the game when a club such as Manchester City, a complete basket case not that long ago, can completely dominate the domestic and now also the European game, totally on the back of oil dollars. And do we condone what's happening at Newcastle, as Saudi Arabia attempts to gain worldwide credibility purely through its immense wealth? I am first to admit that football in the 70s and 80s had some really dark days, perhaps it's the use of rose tinted spectacles, but at least many other clubs had their moment of fame or near fame, ourselves included.

Of the 13 who took the field for Liverpool in 1984, only 4 were English*. *Qualified to play for England. [Post edited 11 Jun 2023 13:30]
