Cricket purists on 09:16 - Jun 17 by Keno | Morning Ellie Would you rather watch Boycott grinding out 50 runs over 3 days or bowlers bowling balls that while they won’t concede runs have as much chance of taking wickets as I do of becoming pope Sport is about 2 things 1, entertainment 2, results Whether you like it or both bazball and McKennaball provide both And this coming from a cricket purist who loves the 5 day game |
Yes I would far rather watch ‘proper’ test cricket - and saw Boycott many, many times - even with Tavare. Wickets had to earned. Test cricket used to be the pinnacle of the game with sides seen every four years or so. Now it is diluted and utterly devalued - very few countries are bothered with it and most players would rather bash the ball to a short boundary whilst wearing pyjamas. There is nothing new in England’s approach - Australia have been doing it for decades.

I suspect if test cricket was still played in that way it wouldnt still be being played anymore

I suspect it would - just appeal to people who like cricket rather an instant gratification seeking Sky audience. Time was that schools played cricket and touring sides would play university sides - and get accustomed to the conditions. Now nobody bothers and a ludicrous mix of one day panto farces are squeezed in with two, three and four day test matches - usually on dead wickets like this one - and Uber short boundaries.

Well I wish someone would pay me. Cost us £120 a ticket for Sunday

There was a time where there were slaves, the plague, vikings raped and pillaged there way across these islands and French the dominant language Just cos something was in the past in doesn't mean it was good and has to the stay the same

I’m not sure test cricket had any rape, pillage or plague in it, even back in the 60s. What changes have improved test cricket in the last 60 years? Covered pitches, possibly - but even that negated spin bowling

Cricket purists on 03:24 - Jun 17 by gordon | Agreed, the aggressive approach is great, but they easily could have got another 60/70 with Root and Robinson batting well, giving up those runs for 4 overs bowling at them before close probably not worth it and a bit showy. |
Absolutely right. I see the logic in the declaration. Surprise, showing confidence, getting plenty of time to bowl and so on. But the batsmen left could have hung around for an hour or more, scored 30 odd, and allowed Root to get another 50. 480 All out is a far stronger position on a road of a pitch.

the roll of cricket in ending apartheid Fielding standards Anderson and Broad 90 over rule, when applied Helmets protecting batsman DRS doing a good job overturning bad/bias decisions Shane Warne** Ireland playing test matches Floodlights Run rates the desire for positive results the standard of wickets worldwide Thats just for starters ** your comment about covered pitches ignores the fact that the worlds to greatest spinners come after that [Post edited 17 Jun 2023 11:58]

Cricket purists on 08:51 - Jun 17 by ElephantintheRoom | Test cricket used to be watched by people who enjoyed cricket. Now it is watched by people with the attention span of a gnat most of whom are half p!ssed. So yes - this is a bunch of poor test cricketers and Root playing to their strengths - basically reducing test cricket to a somewhat dull elongated form of panto cricket. |
the only panto worthy item in this thread is you...as per usual

Accidental downvote, sorry, neutralised. Doesn’t have to be either-or tho, there’s a happy medium. And purists like yourself are literally a dying breed; without youngsters to carry on watching, Test cricket would actually die out.

Purist? Since when has a grumpy old budgie spouting boll0x about things made him a purist. I love Test cricket, rarely watch T20 because I don't like it as a format, but to be a fan of the longer form of the game and not enjoy this English test team is just plain wrong. I have huge reservations about the way England play, but it's bl00dy entertaining. Far more so thaan as keno said, Geoffrey spending 3 days compiling a 50 and 'fast' bowlers spending 5 minutes between each ball.

Yet most of that Boycott takes so long to score was down to one IT Botham who liked to spin the yarn that he ran him out for a slow scoring rate and the time he got dropped allegedly for it yet he actually was scoring as quickly as all the other batsmen in the team, read his book about it. The first test match I ever went to over 30 years ago when test cricket was supposedly this "slow" and "boring" format, Australia scored 301 without loss, that's only 92 runs short of bazball and 8 wickets better off. Don't always fall for hype.

If you'd listened to the lunch interval TMS feature today on the 2005 Ashes series, you'd have been reminded that Test cricket could be incredibly fast & exciting without 'Bazball'!
