Nailed on names on the teamsheet 16:54 - Jul 5 with 5626 views | Cheltenham_Blue | ..........................Walton Clarke............Wolfie...........????.............Davis ....................Morsy...........????? ????/Burns...............Chaplin.................Broadhead .............................??????? Only reason for the ????? next to Morsy is I really don't know who his nailed on partner will be. But think we'll be looking for another CB, obviously a striker or two and some serious competition for Burns. [Post edited 5 Jul 2023 18:36]

Nailed on names on the teamsheet on 21:16 - Jul 5 by Horsham | I think that’s accurate. That leaves the recruitment looking like; 1 x left sided centre back- high priority 1 x number 9 - high priority 1 x right winger - medium priority Upgrades across the rest of the squad - lower priority Taking the high and medium priority recruitment, what kind of profiles/skill sets etc are we likely to look for? At a guess for the CB we’ll be looking for a bit of a specimen who can handle defending and the ball. For the #9 basically Hirst or someone with similar qualities but better, another specimen, a presser, a runner behind, a winner of headers, target man, finisher. For the right winger…I think that’s a bit more up for debate. Could want something quite different to Burns. |
I think 2x number 9 personally. Can't see Pigott being here in late August, which effectively leaves Freddie on his own. You could count Jackson and Chaplin as Number 9's if you were really desperate, but we'd be really lightweight with just Ladapo plus one. Also, I don't think Jackson will start the season with us.

Yeah, agreed.... on 21:19 - Jul 5 by Guthrum | However, I do also feel that the gap between L1 and the Champ can be overstated. The upper end are much better, but the bottom third are not really so far away from the reasonable sides of the level below, if at all. It isn't like things suddenly became wildly easier when we went down in 2019. |
Indeed. Although it could be argued that if 'HMS Pi ss The League' hadn't sunk in 2019, we might never have been sold. Imagine that.

Yes, to replace Clarke.... on 21:09 - Jul 5 by Cheltenham_Blue | I'm very capable of grasping the meaning of a thread I started myself thanks Bloots. But, thanks for trying to explain it to me. The thread is about guaranteed starters as we are now, If we aren't bringing someone in during this window, not surmising about who will start or not based on who we might sign in 6 months time. We are not going to replace Clarke after 6 months and stick him on the bench this window at all, as you said yourself. But all my other question marks might well be. So do you think JD will might be favoured over Clarke then? [Post edited 5 Jul 2023 21:16]

....if this thread is about "guaranteed starters as we are now" then Ladapo is a guaranteed starter, yet you haven't included him. He's certainly more of a guaranteed starter than Clarke, who at least has an alternative in the squad. Ladapo doesn't. And as noted elsewhere, you don't count Taylor as a guaranteed starter yet Clarke is, a decision you appear to base on the fact that he's not been here long and we paid a hefty fee for him. Go and have a lie down, you're getting yourself confused.

I think there’s a good chance you’re right about number 9’s. A bit like goalkeepers you need one on the pitch every minute, every game and unlike goalkeepers they tend to be subbed most games so you need a minimum 3 in the squad.

Oh calm down Bloots, it's a matter of opinion is all.

Nailed on names on the teamsheet on 17:54 - Jul 5 by FrimleyBlue | I'm not so sure on Morsy. At present no new contract on offer. Last year of current contract. Does KM see him as part of our future? |
You've put your neck on the block a bit Frimley with a rather nebulous nod to the future; I expect Morsy to be important for us next season. Otherwise I'm in your team! We're comfortable with the contract situation, as much as age may be a factor in not wishing to secure his services for longer right now. Then, our highest rated player on TWTD last season, a good half-point above even Broadhead (who also benefitted from missing the lean winter spell), has the same contract length as Sam and is a year younger. Maybe player scores on this site are submitted by news commenters and radio listeners (I've never partaken myself), but a section on here evidently feels the star in the middle from Feb onwards was the boy from Oz. Add Taylor to the ranks and I don't subscribe to Morsy being nailed on or probable #1. More likely than not is how I'd put it, and nailed on to get a good amount of minutes whether he's ultimately #1 or #3. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I think we are. But it's the lower end teams you have to beat to be among the front runners, the top end less so. If you can win home and away against the worst eight teams, you'll be well on your way to at least the play-offs, even if you only get mostly draws versus the top six. Not saying we have no need to recruit, far from it (we're a stiker down, for a start). But don't believe wholesale changes are required, either. Especially as we had a very strong L1 squad*, with a fair bit of Champ experience already. * Finished 12 ponts clear of 4th place and 22 points from 7th (which latter is more than the gap between 10th and 23rd). The top three teams really did run away from all the others, not just the bottom few.

Chaplin, Broadhead, Davis, Walton..... on 17:40 - Jul 5 by the_toff | For me: Nailed on (6): Walton, Woolf, Davis, Morsy, Broadhead, Chappers Highly likely (2): Taylor, Burns. I think it's all to play for with the striker, RB and left sided CB positions. Ladapo, Clarke and Burgess / Edmundson the pick right now, but wouldn't rule out that changing. |
Clarke didn't have a stellar end to the season, but I think he has done enough at least to be in your "highly likely category". Given that we have JD with his wealth of experience and cool head as a back up, I'd be amazed to see a first choice RB come in when (i) we clearly have other priorities, (ii) Clarke cost a pretty penny, (iii) he hasn't done an awful lot wrong, and (iv) will only make good on the buying and selling profit-making strategy if he plays.
