I know they shouldn't but... 08:31 - Jul 24 with 5455 viewsBondiBlue

...pre-season results are making me nervous. We've had a good run, the best for many years. Surely it's time for it to start going horribly wrong now.

McKenna: Today Was About Accumulating Minutes 22nd Jul 2023 18:43
Manager Kieran McKenna’s main concern was his players accumulating minutes from this afternoon’s friendlies at Cambridge United and Stevenage with the results and performances not the main focus. 19

See also Mick Stockwell's testimonial - beating Champions League semi finalists the previous season, and Portuguese Cup holders Porto, managed by Sir Bob, and crammed with internationals.

That'll be pre season 1994/95 then.

Its not the way football works. Our trajectory is upwards. I suspect to mid table premiership. We go into the Championship with a much better Squad than Sunderland won the play offs with the year before. We should be aiming for the playoffs. Hopefully the Chelsea Lad is our Amad Diallo.

Also, unless my memory's failing me, didn't we lose 6-0 at Charlton in a final pre-season game under Mick... and then go undefeated for 5/6 games when the season started to go top of the Champ?

We were terrible pre season in 1991/92 and that turned out ok.

As long as McKenna gets from pre season what he wants from it, nothing else matters, including results.

Nothing to worry about.

I don't know - football can be pretty random. And you could use the momentum argument as a reason to worry about cambridge and stevenage. What if it rocks our confidence and everything snowballs etc etc

I was at that Porto game, we were sat in the middle of the Pioneer stand and spent the whole game trying to get a wave out of Booby

What part of "not proper games" are you struggling with?

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

The bit where a footballer goes home after a game he's played badly in and his team has lost and it doesn't dent his confidence one jot because it's 'not a proper game' according to someone on the internet. He doesn't worry about his place in the team at all. He goes to training the next day a bundle of joy, his first touch is perfect and everything he hits flies straight into the top corner. It's like it never happened.

Yep, that's pretty spot on (unlike the sarcasm you were attempting).

"His team lost" - again, this isn't "his team". Playing for half an hour, with people of varying levels of fitness, mass changes, youths he's never played with. No, it's not his team.

Also, how fragile do you think our players are?!

If anyone goes home upset and doubting their own ability after a loss in a pre-season friendly it's a bloody miracle they made it as a professional footballer.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

I hate losing any match, just my nature.

However, I also appreciate and recognise that pre season is purely about building minutes ready for the 6th August, and getting as many people as possible, as fit as possible for the season.

I've also been around football long enough to realise pre season results have absolutely no correlation to how your season will play out.

I'm replying to this post but it applies equally to all of your posts in this thread: stop being such a massive, daft fanny.
